Plagued by injuries over much of the last two seasons, the Minnesota Timberwolves enter 2013-14 with good health and high expectations. In Ricky Rubio, Kevin Love and Nikola Pekovic, the Wolves have a strong (and seriously entertaining) foundation. Adding Kevin Martin and Shabazz Muhammad to a group of role players that includes Derrick Williams, Chase Budinger and Corey Brewer, the Wolves should absolutely be in the hunt for a playoff run.
A Brief History
Founded in 1989, the Minnesota Timberwolves filled the void left by the Lakers who headed for Southern California in 1960. Now almost a quarter century later, the Timberwolves are still seeking that elusive first championship.
Debuting in the 1989-90 season, the Wolves were a massive hit in the Twin Cities, drawing an NBA record 1M+ fans as they played home games in the Metrodome (home of the Vikings) before moving to the Target Center the following year. Struggling through those early seasons, the Timberwolves struck gold in the 1995 NBA Draft with Kevin Garnett. The fiery, dominating big man put the Wolves on the map and led them to the playoffs eight consecutive years. In 2004, the Wolves made their deepest run, taking out the Denver Nuggets and then the Sacramento Kings before bowing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Conference Finals.
Since that 2003-04 season, the Timberwolves have struggled to regain their form and haven’t earned a playoff bid in the last nine seasons. Dealing Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics in 2007, a full rebuild was initiated. While Garnett went on to win a title with the Celtics and now calls Brooklyn home, the Wolves are finally ready to return to contention.
