On December 4, 1956, four music legends—Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash—gathered together at Sun Records Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, for an impromptu jam session. Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records, organized and recorded the meeting under the name “Million Dollar Quartet,” and taped classic hits like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Matchbox,” “Great Balls Of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues.”
The historic recordings inspired a jukebox musical of the same name, which debuted to audiences in Florida and Washington in 2006 and 2007, respectively, before heading to Chicago in 2008 and then Broadway two years later. The musical earned three Tony nominations in 2010, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical, and walked away with a win for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical. (The Tony went to Levi Kreis, who played Jerry Lee Lewis.) “Audiences with any affection for the music will most likely enjoy most of Million Dollar Quartet for the same reasons they’ve been flocking to Jersey Boys since its opening,” the New York Times noted in its 2010 review of the musical. “And musically Quartet is far more satisfying.”
Whether you’re an Elvis fanatic or just a rock ’n’ roll nostalgia junkie, it’s hard to argue with a musical that highlights one of music’s most exciting and inventive eras. With ScoreBig, you save on every Million Dollar Quartet ticket, every day.
