Early Life

Miguel was born in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California on October 23, 1985. His parents divorced when he was eight years old and from then on, he and his brother spent most of their time with their mother. By the time Miguel was fourteen years old, he was already writing and recording his own songs.

Beginnings of Career and Breakthrough Success

In 2004, Miguel was signed to independent record label Black Ice. He recorded the album Young & Free in 2006 but Black Ice did not release it. The record label did release a single by Miguel called “Getcha Hands Up”. Miguel was not pleased with this single nor the management of Black Ice as a whole so he decided to leave the label. Jive Records signed Miguel in 2007. With Jive Records, Miguel recorded his debut album, called All I Want Is You. Once recorded though, Black Ice sued Miguel due to breach of contract and therefor the release of his debut album was put on hold. Once the legal battle with Black Ice was over, Jive Records could finally drop Miguel’s debut album. All I Want Is You was released in November 2010. It debuted at number 109 on the Billboard 200 but slowly creeped its way up on the charts. It eventually peaked at number 37 by May 2011. The album had four singles which were “All I Want Is You” (feat. J. Cole), “Sure Thing”, “Quickie”, and “Girls Like You”.

Label Change and Kaleidoscope Dream

Jive Records was shut down and absorbed by RCA Records in 2011, and therefor Miguel also moved to RCA. Together, RCA and Miguel worked on Miguel’s second studio album, which was titled Kaleidoscope Dream. Kaleidoscope Dream dropped in November 2012 and debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. It is now certified platinum in the United States with over a million copies sold. The three singles for the album were “Adorn”, “Do You…”, and “How Many Drinks?” (feat. Kendrick Lamar). “Adorn” was Miguel’s second number 1 single on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single also won a Grammy Award in 2013 for Best R&B Song and was nominated for Song of the Year and Best R&B Performance. At the same Grammy Awards, Kaleidoscope Dream was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album. At the 2014 Grammy Awards Miguel was nominated for two more awards. These included Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Power Trip” (with J. Cole) and Best R&B Performance for “How Many Drinks?” (with Kendrick Lamar). Miguel was continuing to make a name for himself in the music world while he worked on his third studio album.

Wildheart and War & Leisure

Miguel’s third studio album, Wildheart, dropped in June 2015. Wildheart peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and was nominated at the 2016 Grammy Awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album. The album’s only single was “Coffee” which was also nominated at the 2016 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song. Miguel’s fourth and most recent studio album is War & Leisure which dropped in December 2017. War & Leisure debuted at number 9 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This album includes features from Rick Ross, Travis Scott, Quin, Kali Uchis, J. Cole, and Salaam Remi. Singles for War & Leisure are “Sky Walker” (feat. Travis Scott), “Told You So”, and “Come Through and Chill” (feat. J. Cole and Salaam Remi).
