Formation and Early Days
Migos is basically a family band – Quavo, 26 and Offset, 25 are cousins and Takeoff, 22, Is Quavo’s nephew. The band was formed in 2009 and was initially known as Polo Club. The three members grew up together in Gwinnett County. The band released its first musical project, a mixtape, in August 2011, called Juug. Another mixtape, called No Label was soon released on 1st June, 2012.
Breakthrough – “Versace”
In 2013, Migos released their single “Versace”, which proved to be a major breakthrough for their career. The single, produced by Zaytoven, peaked at number 99 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and gave Migos the kind of fame they were looking for. In late 2013, this song was purchased by Drake and was released in a remixed format, with one verse added. Drake also performed the single at the 2013 iHeartRadio Music Festival, giving it more recognition across the country.
Young Rich Niggas
After carving a niche for themselves in the industry, the trio then released their mixtape, Y.R.N. (Young Rich Niggas). The single, “Versace” was featured on this album and received a lot of critical acknowledgement. This work was compared with the work of Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy and Future. In 2013, “Versace” was listed at the third spot on XXL’s “The 25 Best Songs of 2013”. The album, Y.R.N. also ranked as the 27th best album of 2013 and the sixth best hip hop album of the year, according to SPIN.
More Mixtapes and the Debut Album
Following this initial success, Migos began working on some new music. They released their second mixtape, called, No Label 2, in February 2014. Within the first week of its release, the tape was downloaded more than 100,000 times and was certified gold on DatPiff. The mixtape was described as “extensive and impressive” by Vibe.
Further success followed when the single “Fight Night” peaked at number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2014. Migos’ mixtape, Rich Nigga Timeline, released in November 2014 was voted as the 7th best rap album of 2014 by Rolling Stone.
In February 2015, the trio gave their fans a taste of their new album by releasing the lead single “One Time”. “They’re the Beatles of this generation… There’s a generation of kids — like, the YouTube generation I came up with — that are growing up on something that’s completely separate from a whole group of people. That song, Bad and Boujee, is just fly.”
