Audiences first fell under Maxwell’s neo-soul spell in the late ’90s with the release of his breakthrough album Urban Hang Suite and the hit song “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder).” Not only did his debut go on to sell over 2 million copies, but it also earned the silky crooner a Grammy nomination in 1997 for Best R&B Album. Unfortunately, he didn’t leave that year with a coveted gramophone trophy, but he did walk away with two in 2010—one for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Pretty Wings” and another for Best R&B Album for BLACKsummers’night.
Maxwell hasn’t released a full-length album since his Grammy wins, but that doesn’t mean he’s been silent all these years. For example, he recorded a duet with Jennifer Lopez called “I Wanna Love.” In an interview with Rap Up, J. Lo couldn’t stop gushing about her love for the soul singer: “I recorded it by myself first and I was like, ‘You know who would be so beautiful on this record? Maxwell.’ And Maxwell and I have known each other forever. Almost every album, we say we gotta do something, You have to wait for the right song and I finally got up the nerve to send it to him and said, ‘You’re gonna like this one.’ I sent it to him, he loved it, and he was like, ‘OK. I’m gonna put my thing on it.’ I’m really excited about it.” Hopefully, Maxwell will keep his creative streak going and release even more new music soon. Save on every Maxwell ticket, every day.
