Matilda the Musical is based on the Roald Dahl childhood classic we all know and love. Centered on the whimsical antics of a misplaced 5-year-old, this tale of youth against school and familial pressure is brought to life with award-winning song and dance numbers.
Matilda the Musical debuted in Stratford's historic Royal Shakespeare Company in 2009. The production's immediate successes lead to its relocation to London's celebrated West End, with a debut at the Cambridge Theater in 2011.
It didn't take long for this beloved childhood classic to receive its invitation to the theater capital of the world: New York City's very own Broadway . The show is set to hit the Shubert Theatre in April 2013, starring original cast member and Olivier award winner Bertie Carvel as Miss Trunchbull. Though there were some initial talks of 'American-izing' the production, the show's producers have decided to keep the production set in England to maintain its authenticity.
Just like the award-winning novel by the same name, Matilda the Musical quickly garnered numerous awards and recognitions. In 2011, the original production won a Critics' Circle Theatre Award, two UK Theatre Awards, and a British Composer Award. In 2012, the production was graced again with a whopping seven Laurence Olivier Awards.
The Independent called Matilda the Musical, 'Utterly exhilarating.'The Guardian described it as 'Gleefully nasty. An evening of unadulterated bliss. ' The Daily Telegraph wrote, 'Hilarious, moving, and magical glorious production. '
