Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born in January 1971, in Bronx, New York, Mary J. Blige grew up singing in a Pentecostal church. After dropping out from high school in her junior year, she decided to pursue a career in music. For a short period, the rising star was a part of a Yonkers band called Pride, alongside drummer Eddie D’Aprile. In 1988, one of her impromptu recordings got into the hands of Jeff Redd, a recording artist who was an A&R runner for Uptown Records. Seeing the potential in the young starlet, Mary J. Blige was signed on to the label as a backup vocalist.
Working with record producer Puff Daddy, Blige released her debut album, What’s the 411? in 1992 and received great reviews for it. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album also landed at number 53 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified three times Platinum by the RIAA. The huge commercial success of this album made Blige a star overnight. She was noted for having the perfect “tough girl persona with streetwise lyrics” and being the “real deal”.
With multiple awards won for this album, Blige continued on her road to success by releasing another album, My Life, in 1994. The album served as a major breakthrough for the artist. The album debuted at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, selling a staggering 481,000 copies within the first week of sales and remaining at the top position for eight weeks straight. The album spent a total of 46 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and 84 weeks on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Rolling Stone added the album to its list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and in 2006; it was also added to the Time magazine’s list of 100 greatest albums of all time.
