About Maroon 5

The multiple-Grammy Award winning pop rock group, Maroon 5, originated in Los Angeles, California, in 1994 under the name Kara’s Flowers. After failing to create a major impact with their first album, The Fourth World in 1997, the group parted ways and went their separate ways. But as fate would have it, music would become the biggest part of their future. Taking a risk, Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael dropped everything and moved to LA to give music making another shot. Developing a more contemporary sound this time, with noted elements of R&B and pop, the band managed to create magic in a small period of time, impressing lots of people along the way and paving the way for superstardom.

Today, Maroon 5 is one of the most popular pop groups, with numerous hits to their name. They embarked on their Red Pill Blues World Tour on 26th October, 2017 and are expected to play songs from their latest album, Red Pill Blues, along with some of their most popular music from the past. If you want to catch this action live, you ought to get these Maroon 5 tickets.

Musical Style and Influences

Talking about the work of the band, frontman Adam Levine said, "Everything that's written and performed and put together pretty much comes from us. I just think people would be surprised to know that we’re a self-contained unit. We’re a band that does their own thing. There’s no puppet master."

The band has listed several big names as their influences – Michael Jackson, The Police, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake, Tupac Shakur, Marvin Gaye and Billy Joel are to name a few. The band’s earlier albums, Songs About Jane and Hands All Over, explore similar themes, related to love and infatuation. However, subsequent music like the single “Moves Like Jagger” and “One More Night” saw a significant shift in the band’s musical style, adding a more dance feel to their sound.

Formation of the Band and Early Days

Starting out in their early teens, the band members met while attending the Brentwood EMH School in Los Angeles. Friends Adam and Jesse teamed up with Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick to form Kara’s Flowers. The name was a reference to a girl that all of the band members had a ‘collective crush’ on. They were discovered by independent producer Tommy Allen while playing at a beach party and were eventually signed on to Reprise Records. After the failure of their first album, however, the band left the label and the music business altogether – only to regroup a few years later in 2001. After creating a demo and going to different labels with it, they were soon signed on to Octone Records. A fifth member was added to the lineup to free up Adam Levine of his guitar playing duties and to allow him to become the vocal star of the group. With all things in place, the band started to work on its debut album.

Breakthrough with Songs About Jane

The debut studio album by the band, called Songs About Jane was released in June, 2002 and became a sleeper hit. It gradually rose on the charts with singles such as “Harder to Breathe” and super hits such as “She Will Be Loved” and “This Love”. The album was re-released in October 2003 and was a huge international success. It topped charts in multiple countries including France, Australia, UK and Ireland. By the end of 2004, it had sold more than 5.1 million copies in the US alone and more than 10 million copies across the world.

The band was invited by John Mayer to open for him during his 2003 tour. Mayer, who was impressed particularly by “This Love”, had attended the Berklee College of Music with James Valentine, another Maroon 5 member.

It Won’t Be Soon Before Long

Maroon 5 began recording their second album in 2006. It Won’t Be Soon Before Long was released in the summer of 2007 under A&M Octone Records. The album derives inspiration from the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince and Shabba Ranks. The Los Angeles Times talked about this album, saying that it was “an icy-hot blend of electro-funk and blue-eyed soul that works its cruel streak with the confidence of Daniel Craig's James Bond."

The lead single from this album, “Makes Me Wonder”, hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making the biggest jump in the history of Billboard – going from No. 64 to No. 1. The song also topped the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart, Pop 100 and the Hot Dance Club Play charts.

Further Success with Hands All Over

The third album by the band, Hands All Over, was released in September, 2010 and debuted at No. 2 on Billboard 200. The first single from the album, “Misery” was a big hit. “Moves Like Jagger” featuring Christina Aguilera was also made a part of the album later and peaked at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Around this time, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine also featured on a track by Gym Class Heroes, “Stereo Hearts”, which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

Overexposed

The band released its fourth album, Overexposed, in June 2012. The song “Payphone” featuring Wiz Khalifa, from this album was a mega hit, peaking at No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single from the album, “One More Night” was also a super hit and topped the charts, blocking “Gangnam Style” from the top spot.

“Daylight”, the third single from the album peaked at No.1 on the charts, four months after its release. It helped the band set a record for the most No.1’s by a band in 20 years.

V – The Fifth Album

Released on 29th August, 2014, V, was one of the most successful efforts by the band. It opened at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling more than 164,000 copies within the first week of sales. The album had three hit singles – “Maps”, “Animals” and “Sugar”.

Awards and Achievements

The pop-rock band has been the recipient of three Grammy Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, five Teen Choice Awards and three American Music Awards. In addition to this, the group has also been nominated for numerous awards including the Juno Awards, BRIT Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards and others. To date, the group has sold more than 20 million records and 48 million singles worldwide.

Red Pill Blues and 2017

It was announced that the band’s new album would be released in November 2017 and would be called, Red Pill Blues. The album, out now, has been making waves on the pop music scene, with singles such as “Don’t Wanna Know” featuring Kendrick Lamar and “Cold” featuring Future.
