Early Years

Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, Long Island, New York, on March, 27, 1970. Her father was an aeronautical engineer while her mother an opera singer and voice coach. Carey was only three years old when her parents divorced.

Having watched her mother perform, Carey was inclined towards music since an early age. She surprised her mother by imitating her operatic singing performance at age two. Carey began taking singing lessons when she turned four.

Following her graduation from Harborfields High School in New York, Carey moved to Manhattan and took up odd jobs while side by side studying cosmetology, writing songs and actively pursuing her career as a music artist. When she had earned enough money, she relocated to New York City with her family.

During Carey’s struggling days, she became friends with rising pop singer, Brenda K. Starr. In December of 1988, the two went to a gala hosted by CBS Records. Starr asked Carey to bring her demo tape along. Although they intended to give it to Jerry Greenberg, but before they could do so, it landed in the hands of Tommy Mottola, the president of Columbia Records at the time. After listening to the recording, Mottola signed Carey for her debut self-titled music album. Released in 1990, the record spawned number one hit singles such as I Don’t Wanna Cry, Some Day, Love Takes Time and Vision of Love. The album not only hit the number one spot on the Billboard 200 but also won the debut singer a number of awards and nominations. But this was just the beginning of a music career that would become one of the most successful ones in recent times.

Mariah Carey followed up the success of her self-titled debut record with Emotions in 1991. Whereas her first album had a contemporary pop and R&B sound, Emotions carried influences of soul, R&B, pop and gospel music of the 1960s and 1970s. The record’s title track reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. With this, Carey became the only music artist in history to have her first five singles reach the top of the chart. Other popular songs off Emotions included Make It Happen and Can’t Let Go.

In March of 1992, Carey made an appearance on the American television series, Unplugged. Her performance on the show was released as a record later. The album earned triple Platinum certification by the RIAA.

Carey’s following music album titled Music Box came out in 1993. For this record, the singer chose a more contemporary R&B and pop oriented sound. In order to expand her fan base and her music, she experimented with different musical instruments and cut down on the studio techniques that were made use of in her previous two efforts. The record comprised number one singles such as Hero and Dreamlover.

In November, 1994, Carey treated her fans with her first Christmas album titled Merry Christmas. It featured a combination of new songs and traditional Christmas hymns. With sales of fifteen million copies, it ranks as one of the best-selling Christmas albums of all-time. Its song All I Want For Christmas is You went on to become the bestselling ringtone in the country.

In the year 1995, Carey released the album Daydream, the first single of which was a number one hit. It featured a collaborative song One Sweet Day with the R&B music group Boys II Men which stayed on the American music charts for nearly sixteen weeks.

Carey’s 1997 music record Butterfly featured eleven compositions written by the singer herself. It sold over 230,000 copies in its first week of release and topped the Billboard 200.

In 2001, Mariah Carey suffered from ‘a physical and emotional collapse’ owing to which she wasn’t able to appear in promotional activities for her movie Glitter. The movie did not fare well on the box office. Carey’s ninth studio album Charmbracelet received a mediocre response as compared to her previous music contributions.

Released in 2005, The Emancipation of Mimi is largely considered the comeback record of the pop diva. Its singles It’s Like That and We Belong Together were major hits.

In 2010, she appeared in a feature film Precious wherein she played the role of a social worker. Unlike Glitter, the movie and Carey’s performance received a positive response from fans and critics alike. Carey today has acting credits in movies including The Butler, A Christmas Melody, The Lego Batman Movie and several others.

In her illustrious music career, Mariah Carey has worked in collaboration with numerous music artists. In 2011, she re-recorded her famous Christmas song All I Want for Christmas is You with the teenage sensation, Justin Bieber. The track appeared on Bieber’s first holiday album Under the Mistletoe.

The pop music artist’s most recent studio effort, Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse hit the shelves in 2014. The record was highly praised by the critics.
