Early Life & Influences

Marco Antonio Solis is influenced by legendary Latin stars Enrique Guzmán, Los Huracanes del Norte, Johnny Laboriel and Los Tigres del Norte.

The Latin pop megastar, Marco Antonio Solis began to develop interest in music when he was young. At age twelve, he started a group, Los Hermanitos Solis with his cousin, Joel Solis. After a few years, the duo decided to pursue music seriously and formed another band, Los Bukis in 1975 by recruiting two more members, Enrique “Kike” and Jorge De Avila. The group later signed a record deal with Discos Melody which released their first studio effort, ‘Faiso Amor.’ The record did well, making the group even more famous in Latin America.

As a principal songwriter and lead singer of Los Bukis, Marco Antonio Solis continued to pen down hit music and churned out more hit records including ‘Te Tuve Y Te Perdi’ and ‘Los Triunfadores.’ The group later moved to the United States and signed with Fonovisa Records and released a number of highly successful albums like, ‘A Través de Tus Ojos’ and ‘Si Me Recuerdas.’ Both of these studio records were nominated for the Grammy Award under the category of, ‘Best Latin Pop Album’ and ‘Best Mexican-American Album’ respectively.

Apart from recording music with the band, Solis was also seen writing songs for other artists like Rocío Dúrcal and Marisela. In 1995, he decided to part ways with Los Bukis after the group’s final album ‘Por Amor a Mi Pueblo’ hit the markets. It achieved gold status in the United States and earned them a Premio Lo Nuestro nomination for ‘Pop Album of the Year.’

Pursuing a Solo Career

Marco Antonio Solis embarked on a solo journey by kicking things off with his first album, ‘En Pleno Vuelo’ in 1996. It generated waves across North & South America and apart from landing at the third spot on the Top Latin Albums, the record was also certified gold by the RIAA. Two more studio efforts, ‘Marco’ and ‘Trozos de Mi Alma’ later came out that decade out of which the latter marked his first album to climb the first spot on the Top Latin Albums.

‘Trozos de Mi Alma’ was well received in Argentina and the United States as it went platinum in both countries. While in Mexico, the record turned out to be a huge success and was awarded diamond certification. In addition, this album also featured a song, Si No Te Hubieras Ido which appeared on the soundtrack of the Mexican film, ‘Y Tu Mamá También.’

Marco Antonio Solis continued to define Latin pop music with his hits and put out his first record of the 21st century titled, ‘Más de Mi Alma’ in 2001. It got him a Latin Grammy Award nomination under the category of, ‘Best Pop Vocal Album.’ It also received three stars out of five from AllMusic. Solis’s next studio efforts, ‘Tu Amor o Tu Desprecio,’ ‘Razón de Sobra,’ ‘No Molestar’ and ‘Trozos de Mi Alma, Vol. 2’ all reached the first spot on the Billboard Top Latin Albums and helped him to become more famous. The latter achieved multi-platinum status in the United States and produced a single, Ojalá which charted at the top spot on the Hot Latin Tracks.
