A Brief History of Lollapalooza
Lollapalooza was an idea conceived by Jane’s Addiction’s, Perry Farrell. Inspired by the Gathering of the Tribes concerts, Farrell created the festival as a farewell tour for his group in 1990. Now it takes place annually and is not restricted to a single genre.
Lollapalooza began as a touring festival that travelled across the United States and Canada. The festival kicked off in 1991. It toured North America from July 18, 1991 to August 28, 1991. That year, some of the biggest names from the music industry played music at Lollapalooza including, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nine Inch Nails, Living Color, Violent Femmes, Rollins Band and Ice T & Body Count among others.
The Evolution of Lollapalooza
During its initial years, Perry Farrell depended heavily on alternative and grunge acts, since these two genres were booming at the time. The show enjoyed a lot of success as a result of that but because of alternative rock music’s declining popularity the festival was cancelled in 1998. However in 2003, Lollapalooza was revived. Since 2005, the festival has been taking place at the Grant Park in Chicago. In 2011, the festival was performed outside of the United States for the first time when it made its way to Chile’s capital, Santiago. Since then it has evolved into a global phenomenon.
