Lady Gaga’s stage name interestingly comes from one of her great influences, Queen, and their 1984 hit “Radio Gaga”. Developing almost a genre of her own, Gaga combines dramatic theatrical performances with a pop electronic sound, a blend that has brought her to the top of the charts since 2008. Upon first glance, fans and critics tend to focus on her outrageous and sometimes slightly ridiculous ensembles. But she’s a phenomenal piano player, having studied for a brief period of time at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Some of her earlier musical endeavors included theatre roles and involvement in a band featuring fellow NYU students with whom she would perform covers of her main influences; classic rock tunes in New York’s underground music scene.
Gaga’s getups at the Grammys and MTV Video Music Awards throughout the years have demanded attention: hatching out of an incubating egg, her stint as male alter-ego Jo Calderone, the red carpet in a dress made of raw meat. Each performance is as elaborate as the last, making for live shows full of energy and surprise. She utilizes her power in mass media to translate some iconic messages, especially through her single “Born This Way”, of which she explains is “about being yourself, and loving who you are and being proud.” Five Grammy awards and thirteen VMAs later, Lady Gaga has released her latest album titled Artpop, composed of hits “Applause” and “Do What U Want”. Extravagant choreography and many outfit changes comprise her latest tour, ArtRave: The Artpop Ball Tour.
