Formation and Early Days of Lady Antebellum

Members of this country pop group have been associated with music since a long time, thanks to family members in the industry. For instance, Scott is the daughter of country musician, Linda Davis, who is best known for her song “Does He Love You.” In addition to that, Charles Kelly is the brother of country musician Josh Kelly. Kelly and Haywood met in middle school and decided to pursue a career in music. They were soon approached by Hillary Scott via MySpace and formed a new group called Lady Antebellum. The band soon started performing at local venues within Nashville, before being noticed by and signed by Capitol Records.

While talking about her early days in the music industry, Hillary Scott remembers that she was rejected from the auditions stage of American Idol two times – not even going beyond the first round on both occasions.

The Story Behind the Band’s Name

The name of the band comes from a time when the group was photographing “antebellum” homes. Referring to the antebellum architectural style, the band explained how the world bellum means “war” and “antebellum” therefore translates to “before the war”. While on their photographing project, one of the group members felt that they could make a great band name using this word – the name Lady Antebellum was adopted soon after.

Breakthrough

Shortly after signing on to the record label, the band was signed on by Jim Brickman to sing on “Never Alone”, his 2007 single. This song reached No. 14 on the adult contemporary charts on Billboard. Lady Antebellum released its own solo debut single called “Love Don’t Live Here” in September 2007. Their first album, the eponymous Lady Antebellum was released in April 2008. The song “Love Don’t Live Here” became a hit as it reached No.3 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Lady Antebellum was a highly successful debut, as it ended up debuting at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. Other early successes included “Lookin’ for a Good Time,” “I Run to You,” “I Was Here” and a rendition of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. By October 2009, the debut album by the band had achieved a platinum status by the RIAA, selling more than a million copies in the US alone.

Need You Now – Major Success

In August of 2009, Lady Antebellum released the lead single from their second album. The single, called “Need You Now” debuted on the charts at No.50 and eventually topped multiple charts, including the Hot Adult Contemporary chart. Singles “American Honey” and “Our Kind of Love” from the album also went on to become chart toppers. The album itself was released on 26th January, 2010 and topped the Billboard 200 chart, along with the Top Country Albums chart. Within four weeks, the album was certified Platinum.

The group started working on its third album in early 2011. After the release of a single “Just a Kiss” from the album, the album itself, called Own the Night, was released in September 2011. Singles “We Owned the Night” and “Wanted You More” did well on the charts.
