About Kinky Boots
Kinky Boots is an electrifying and outrageous musical theater experience! While it was most definitely the underdog of 2013 musicals, we couldn’t be happier that it’s still going, and stronger than ever! With theater royalty Harvey Fierstien’s book, radio icon Cyndi Lauper behind the music and lyrics, and choreography by the great Jerry Mitchell, it is no surprise that Kinky Boots received the Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Original Score in 2013.
Currently being staged at the Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre, the musical has entered its fifth sold-out year. Wonderfully sassy, inspiring and ever so kinky, the award-winning musical has high-kicked its way from Broadway to the West End to a US tour. The leading cast for the 2017 tour includes Jos N. Banks as Lola, Lance Bordelon as Charlie Price, Sydney Patrick as Lauren and Hayley Lampart as Nicola. The overwhelming demand for Kinky Boots tickets suggests that the “sweetly, vivaciously and irresistibly good” musical is here to stay.

Overview
An uplifting story based on true events, Kinky Boots tells the tale of Charlie, of a struggling and tightly-wound British shoe factory owner, that teams up with Lola, a fabulous drag queen, to save his shoe business in an unexpected but genius way: by building custom shoes for drag queens and kings. With the sentiment that we’re all more alike than we think, Kinky Boots preaches a time-honored lesson of acceptance of others, as well as acceptance of ourselves. Kinky Boots has become a powerful and effective platform for acceptance. With their ‘Just Be” Campaign in 2014, celebrities got in on the discussion of who we are and what we can embrace about each other.
The powerful trio of Jerry Mitchell, Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein has created a show that offers brilliant tongue-in-cheek humor, poignant moments and uplifting music. Kinky Boots is not just about glitz and glamour, but also highlights the importance of family and relationships. Controversial topics like sexuality and gender are also aesthetically brought to stage. Sure, the plot is not exactly groundbreaking but it succeeds in sending the message of accepting others for who they are and not to be judgmental.
Under Mitchell’s direction and choreography and Fierstein’s script, the musical moves at a fast pace. Through its finely calibrated, clever moments, the story hits mark with the audience and makes it an emotional and an endearing spectacle.
Kinky Boots – Original Cast
Before making its Broadway debut, Kinky Boots enjoyed a stellar run at the Chicago’s Bank of America Theater. The 2012 premiere featured Billy Porter as Lola, the beloved drag queen who won millions of hearts. Porter was the first to enter the “Land of Lola” and bid farewell to the character on November 20, 2015, after putting up more than 1000 performances. Porter remained remarkable throughout his stint, landing incredible performances that earned him a Tony Award for the “Best Actor in a Musical”. He brilliantly presented the two sides of Lola, one that was emotionally vulnerable and the other, headstrong. He pumped fierce energy into Cyndi Lauper’s songs and nailed Harvey Fierstein’s quick one-liners with his perfect timing.
Much to the delight of the fans it has been revealed that Billy Porter is set to reprise the role of Lola at the Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre and will remain on the show till January 7, 2018. And he’s not coming alone.
The original Charlie Price, Stark Sands, will also be joining him. Sands left Kinky Boots in January 2015 but not before receiving immense acclaim for his performance. Both Sands and Porter shared amazing chemistry and they are excited to bring it back to the stage.
Annaleigh Ashford managed to impress everyone as Charlie’s girlfriend Lauren. She played the live-wire factory hand to perfection, earning Tony Award nomination for her sizzling energy and phenomenal vocals. Full credit goes to Lauper as she was able to create a score that brought to stage every character’s emotional points and they were able to highlight their personalities through the songs. All the while she managed to retain her own pop sound.
Kinky Boots – Original Score
“Everybody Say Yeah” – as Kinky Boots is a reminder that musicals can lift you up.
An eclectic pop priestess, Cyndi Lauper has been celebrating her unpretentious style and boldness since the early 80s. In Kinky Boots music score, her extravagant individuality and infectious spirit shines through each and every track. Her first work for Broadway, Kinky Boots earned her a Tony Award for the “Best Original Score”, along with a Grammy Award for the “Best Musical Theater Album”.
Her fearlessness shows in the songs as she opted for a melody driven pop sound that astray from the traditional musical theater. Lauper is able to fuel the story, composing disco anthems like “I’m black Jesus, I’m black Mary; But this Mary’s legs are hairy” for Lola. The foot-tapping tracks like “Sex is in the Heel” and “Everybody Say Yeah” showcase an impressive range of styles. “The Soul of a Man” is a soaring ballad that evokes emotions in the audience.
“I’m Not My Father’s Son” is a poignant duet between Lola and Charlie, as they sing about paternal relationship and the expectations it brings. Jerry Mitchell packs the right punch with his choreography, using the stage to his best advantage.

A feel-good theater, the musical is a perfect blend of eccentricity and sentimentality. Under the precise direction of Jerry Mitchell, the characters evolve throughout the show and in the end the audience has no choice but to be a part of their celebration. Harvey Fierstein’s script lacks spunk but Lauper’s infectious score and earnest performances by the actors make up for it. The audacious, friendly show is easy to enjoy and you’ll likely head home with a big smile on your face.
