An exceptionally talented Cleveland-based rapper, Kid Cudi is a Grammy winner who knows how to make hit songs. His debut single, Day ‘n’ Nite catapulted him to mainstream stardom and the world began to talk about him. The song became so popular in the United States that it went on to sell over three million copies in the country and peaked at the third spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Getting Discovered by Kanye West
Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi or known by his stage name as, Kid Cudi was born in 1984. He grew passionate about rapping during his last years in high school after getting inspired by stars like, LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, Tupac and Public Enemy and later went to New York in pursuit of his dreams. There, he stayed with his uncle, Kalil Madi and soon, earned a job at a restaurant. In 2008, Cudi began to record his first extended play and on July 17th of the same year, ‘A Kid Named Cudi’ was issued by the New York City street wear brand, 10.Deep. The EP grabbed Kanye West’s attention who then signed him to his label, GOOD Music.
Soon, West called Cudi to deliver a hook on Jay-Z’s song, Already Home which was included in his album, ‘The Blueprint 3.’ Impressed by his work, Kanye West then asked him to pen down tracks for his record, ‘808’s & Heartbreaks’ and he did just by co-writing the lyrics of four songs, Heartless, Paranoid, RoboCop and Welcome to Heartbreak. He also delivered vocals to the latter which reached at the thirty third spot on the UK R&B Chart. This helped Cudi in gaining international popularity and was promoted as an artist to watch by different publications including, The Source, Vibe and Rolling Stone. Getting His Career on the Road
Kid Cudi continued to thrive in 2009 and made cameo appearances in Solange and The Black Eyed Peas music videos of their songs, ‘T.O.N.Y’ and ‘I Gotta Feeling’ respectively. In addition, he was invited on Snoop Dogg’s show, ‘Dogg After Dark’ and also went on to perform live on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late Show with David Letterman. ‘Man on the Moon: The End of Day’ enjoyed massive critical success as it was included in Complex’s list of, ‘The 10 Best Rap Albums of the Last Five Years’ and received 4/5 stars from AllMusic. The record also gave three singles out of which, Pursuit of Happiness turned out to be a party anthem. It went quadruple times platinum in the United States and was remixed by an electro house DJ, Steve Aoki.
Following the release of the record, Kid Cudi was given the opportunity to co-headline 50 Cent’s concert called, ’50 Fest’ with Wale and in 2010, he churned out a collaborative song with David Guetta titled, Memories. The song was awarded gold certification in five countries and charted at the seventh spot on the Dance Club Songs. On November 9, 2010, Cudi released the sequel of his first album titled, ‘Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager.’ It generated great response from the critics and was placed in the list, ’25 Best Rap Albums from the Past Decade That Deserve Classic Status’ by Complex. On top of that, it achieved gold status in the U.S and reached third spot on the Billboard 200.
The record was supported by two singles including, Erase Me which appeared on ESPN’s popular sports news television program, ‘SportsCenter’ and climbed the twenty second spot on the Billboard 200. It also sold over one million copies in the U.S. Before 2010 could end, Cudi featured on Kanye West’s song, All of the Lights which was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards and made the Slant Magazine’s list of, ‘The 25 Best Singles of 2011.’
Forming WZRD and Indicud
In 2010, Kid Cudi announced that he will be forming a rock band with Dot Da Genius and soon, WZRD came into being. The duo started to work on music right away and put out their debut self-titled studio LP on February 28, 2012. It landed at the top spot on the Rock Albums and consisted of eleven songs on the track-list out of which the band performed Teleport 2 Me, Jamie live on the Emmy winning late-night talk show, ‘Conan.’ The duo has not released another studio record together so far.
Apart from jamming with his friend, Dot Da Genius, Cudi continued to focus on his solo career and came out with his third studio LP, ‘Indicud.’ It turned out to be his second record to peak at the first spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums and was ranked at the twenty sixth spot on the list, ’50 Best Albums of 2013’ by Complex. In addition, it was positioned at the twenty fifth spot in the XXL’s list of the, ‘Best Albums of 2013.’ The record also featured a platinum single, Just What I Am which featured King Chip and peaked at the seventeenth spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
Kid Cudi later came out with two follow-up records, ‘Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon’ and ‘Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven’ in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The former received a lot of critical acclaim and got 8/10 rating from NME while the latter turned out to be his lowest-charting studio effort to date and did not make a strong impact as compared to his previous works.
