Graduating from High School in 2016, it didn’t take long for Khalid to make a notable mark on the music industry. At the young age of only 19, the singer has already had an album peak at number 9 on the Billboard Albums chart and a single, Location, going all the way to No. 38 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
Talking about his interest in music and how he managed it all as a fresh high school graduate, Khalid said, “My high school was what crafted my interest in recording. Everyone at Americas showed me a lot of support. I always wanted to do music and record, but I never had the confidence to do it. I was really nervous.”
Glad to know that the young star was able to overcome his nervousness and create music that wowed audiences across the globe. Currently, Khalid is planning to play shows for his American Teen Tour. If you want to be there when he plays, you need to get your hands on these Khalid tickets at the earliest!
Early Days of Khalid
Khalid Amhearst Robinson was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on 11th February, 1998. His mother had to move around a lot due to her military career, which is why Khalid’s childhood was spent in multiple locations, including New York, Kentucky and Germany. The young star developed an interest in music in high school, where he studied singing and musical theater. After his family moved to El Paso, Khalid graduated from the Americas High School.
Talking about how his move to El Paso was instrumental in his career, Khalid said, “I didn’t feel like I had a home until I moved to El Paso. The love and the friendships I made were influential. El Paso is where I started. I don’t feel like I’d be making the music I’m making now if I hadn’t gone there.”
Musical Beginnings and Stardom
Khalid started working on music in 2015, while still in high school. He incorporated influences of multiple artists, such as Father John Misty and Frank Ocean and posted his songs online. Soon he connected with the producer SkySense, who saw potential in Khalid. SkySense, along with Tunji Ige and Smash David worked on the first single by Khalid – “Location”. The song was released in the middle of 2016 and quickly rose up in the charts. It managed to break into the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart in January 2017. Another single from the upcoming album was released, titled “Hopeless”. This single was also very well received by audiences across the country.
Khalid’s first single was a massive success and helped him reach number 2 on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart by July 2016. He also appeared on multiple other publications, including Billboard, Rolling Stone, Buzzfeed and Yahoo. The single “Location” closed the year 2016 at No. 20 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart.
The video for this song got more than six million views within the first four months of its release on YouTube. The song itself was streamed for more than 35 million times on Spotify.
Collaborations
After gaining a lot of success, Khalid soon started working on collaborative work with various artists. In January 2017, he was featured on Alina Baraz’s new single called “Electric”. He also collaborated with Brasstracks on “Whirlwind”, which received more than 700,000 plays on Soundcloud.
The Success Story
As his fame grew, Khalid was named the New Artist of the Week by Apple Music. He managed to sell out all the venues on his January – February 2017 US “Location Tour” that saw him travel to 21 cities in promotion of his work. Among these sold out shows was the 1500-capacity Tricky Falls in El Paso – filling this hometown venue up was a huge achievement for the young star.
Soon, Khalid made his television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He performed “Location” here in March 2017, with the supporting band The Roots. The singer also got the chance to perform at the yearly Roots Picnic that is held in Philadelphia in the summers.
Success continued to follow the rapper as his song “Angels” got featured on the hit television series Grey’s Anatomy, on ABC Network, in the episode “Don’t Stop Me Now”, which aired on 27th April, 2017.
Achievements for Khalid
In the short amount of time that Khalid has been a part of this industry, he has managed to achieve quite a lot of success. He won the Best New Artist Award at the 2017 Video Music Awards. His album, American Teen has been certified Platinum by the RIAA and has topped the US R&B charts. The album also charted in multiple other countries across Europe.
His single “Location” has been certified three times Platinum since its release. “Young, Dumb & Broke”, another single from his debut album has been certified Platinum and has topped charts in the US and New Zealand.
As a featured artist, his single alongside Logic and Alessia Cara, “1-800-273-8255” was certified three times Platinum. Other singles that were certified or charted at various positions, include “Rollin” with Calvin Harris and Future, “Silence” with Marshmello and “Homemade Dynamite” with Lorde, Post Malone and SZA. His songs “American Teen” and “8TEEN” also made it to the US R&B Charts, peaking at number 22 and 23 respectively.
