Fresh off an empowering performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, Kesha is the talk of the town these days. She was joined by Cyndi Lauper, Andra Day, Camila Cabello and Julia Michaels for an emotional performance of her latest hit, “Praying”, in support of the #MeToo movement. Early Life and Career Beginnings
Kesha was born in Los Angeles in 1987 and was raised by her mother, Patricia Rose “Pebe” Serbert, who also happens to be a singer-songwriter. After struggling financially in life, Kesha dropped out of college to pursue a career in music. She was convinced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke to start making music at the young age of 17. Dr. Luke became interested in her work after listening to one of her demos that he got through Samantha Cox at Broadcast Music Incorporated.
In 2005, at 18 years of age, Kesha was signed on to Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Entertainment, which is owned by Sony Music Entertainment. After switching to David Sonenberg’s company, DAS Communications, Inc, she faced more trouble, unable to make any music that would get noticed. She appeared in the video for “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry and also appeared in Flo Rida’s number one single “Right Round”, though she did not get any credit for the latter.
Kesha’s breakthrough finally came when she signed a multi-album deal with RCA Records through Dr. Luke’s imprint. Her debut album, Animal, was produced by Dr. Luke too. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, upon its release in January 2010. Animal managed to sell more than two million copies all over the world by September 2010 and was certified platinum in the US. The lead single from the album, “Tik Tok” was the biggest hit and broke many records with its impressive 610,000 in digital downloads. The single spent nine weeks at the top of the charts. Subsequent songs from the album, such as “Your Love Is My Drug”, “Blah Blah Blah” and “Take It Off”
More success followed as Animal was re-released with a companion extended play, Cannibal. “We R Who We R”, the lead single from Cannibal debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Thanks to her two chart topping hits and four top ten singles, Kesha was named the Hot 100 Artist of 2010.
Her success streak continued with the release of her second studio album, Warrior. The first single released from this album called “Die Young”, opened at number thirteen on Billboard Hot 100 and ended up peaking at number two.
In October of 2013, Kesha released a single with Pitbull, called “Timber” also produced by Dr. Luke. The single was a massive success internationally and became the singer’s third number one single.
Lawsuit against Dr. Luke
In October 2014, Kesha sued the record producer, Dr. Luke for sexual harassment, gender violence, sexual assault and battery and emotional abuse occurring over a 10 year period in which she worked with him. Kesha sought a release from her contract with Kemosabe Records. On 19th February 2016, New York Supreme Court Judge Shirley Kornreich ruled against her request and dismissed the case.
Return to Music
After appearing as a featured act with several musicians, Kesha returned to the music scene full-time with the release of her single “Praying” on 5th July 2017. The single would later feature on her future album, Rainbow. The album itself was released on 11th August, 2017 and opened at number one on Billboard 200. Rainbow received a highly positive response from Kesha’s supporters and music critics as well. It was complimented for its feminist angle along with a unique vocal performance by the artist. Three tracks were released from the album as promotional singles; “Learn to Let Go”, “Hymn” and “Woman”. The album received a nomination for the Best Pop Vocal Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards and the lead single “Praying” received a nomination in the category of Best Pop Solo Performance.
Artistry and Style
Kesha’s style of music can be categorized as dance-pop, rock, electro-pop and synth-pop. Possessing a strong vibrato, along with a unique yodel-like quality in her voice, Kesha’s sound is as distinct as it gets. He vocals on the album, Animal were processed to quite an extent, with auto-tune to create a rapid stuttering effect and over-pitch corrected vocal effects. Her second album used auto-tune considerably less, with a larger focus placed on guitar and piano-driven ballads such as “Wonderland”, “Past Lives” and “Love Into the Light”. The rock music influences in the album were also noted and praised by Rolling Stone that called the album ‘Kesha’s rock manifesto’.
Kesha has talked about being influenced by the music of various artists including Queen, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Janet Jackson, The Killers, The Black Eyed Peas and many more. She cited Beastie Boys as one of the biggest influences on her music, along with Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.
Awards and Achievements
In a short span of time and despite legal battles, Kesha has still managed to sell nearly 76 million records across the world. As of November 2017, she has sold five million albums and nearly 71 million songs. In addition to such tremendous sales, she has topped eight different charts, including Top New Artists, Hot 100 Artists and Hot 100 Songs.
