It wasn’t easy for Kenny Chesney but then nothing in life is easy. He had to work hard and climb the ladder one step at a time to be where he is today. In retrospect, those tough times played a big part in making him a country music superstar that he is today.
Kenny Chesney is not one to give up. His music is real and so is he. He is now about to hit the road for “Trip Around the Sun Tour” with the likes of Brandon Lay, Old Dominion and Thomas Rhett. The best part is that it is a stadium tour and that is exactly how Chesney likes it. This is what he had to say about it all:
“There’s nothing like a stadium full of people coming together to remind you what life’s about.” The energy, the moments, the fun. Every single one of these artists who’re coming out with us for Trip Around the Sun live their lives the exact same way: they work hard, they appreciate what they’re given and they love music every bit as much as they love life. I, personally, can’t wait to see this show hit the road.”

Kenny Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was given a guitar as a Christmas present and he began to learn how to play the instrument. While studying at the East Tennessee State University, he joined the university’s bluegrass program.
In 1989, he recorded a demo album and released it on his own. He began to perform in clubs in and around Johnson City and sold a thousand copies of the record. The money he received from the sales of the record, he used that to get himself a new guitar. Once he had graduated from university in 1999, Chesney packed his bags and moved to the country music mecca, Nashville. He started to perform at a few local clubs and then became The Turf’s, a honky tonk bar, resident performer.
The Start of a Magical Journey
In the year 1992, he received a songwriter’s deal from Opryland Music Group. Then in 1993, he signed with Capricorn Records as a solo performer. Chesney immediately went to work on his first album “In My Wildest Dreams” which hit the shelves in 1994. The album did not do too well and sold around ten thousand copies only. Capricorn Records then shut down its country music division and Chesney signed with BNA Records. He then released “All I Need to Know,” his second record. The album fared better than its predecessor and went to the thirty ninth spot on the Top Country Albums chart. It was eventually certified gold in the US.
Chesney then released “Me and You” in 1995. The title track of the album and another single When I Close My Eyes both made headlines. Both tracks went as high as the second spot on the Billboard country charts. The album has since been certified platinum and Chesney marked a successful year by winning the Academy of Country Music Award in the category of “New Male Vocalist of the Year.” Chesney then came out with his second successive platinum selling album “I Will Stand” in 1997.
The Rise of a Superstar
Kenny Chesney’s next album “Everywhere We Go” hit the music stores in the year 1999 and became his bestselling record. It contained two chart topping singles You Had Me from Hello and How Forever Feels. The record went on to peak at the fifth spot on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums chart. It was also certified twice platinum, becoming Chesney’s first record to go multi-platinum.
Kenny Chesney had well and truly arrived. He took his popularity to a whole new level with his next album “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems” that was released on April 23, 2002. The album made headlines everywhere. On the critical front, About.com gave it four and a half stars out of five while AllMusic gave it four out of five stars.
Commercially, the record became an incredible success story. It went to the top of the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums and the U.S. Billboard 200. “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems” also became Chesney’s first album to sell in excess of a whopping four million copies to earn quadruple platinum status in the United States.
The Hits Keep on Coming
Kenny Chesney’s next album did not do too badly either. Titled “When the Sun Goes Down,” it hit the stores on February 3, 2004 and went straight to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 on its debut. About.com gave it five stars out of five, while it received four and a half stars out of five from AllMusic.
“When the Sun Goes Down” also peaked at the first spot on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums charts and just like its predecessor, sold well over four million copies in the United States to go four times platinum.
Chesney has released nine studio albums since “When the Sun Goes Down.” Five of those records have gone platinum, one went triple platinum while two of them were certified gold in the US. He has also released five compilation records out of which one has been certified four times platinum, one has gone platinum and one has earned gold certification from the RIAA.
