Kelly Clarkson was born in Fort Worth, Texas on April 24, 1982 and was mostly raised by her mother. In high school she participated in several musicals which is where she learned she had a gift for singing. After graduating high school, Clarkson was offered scholarships to University of Texas at Austin, University of North Texas, and Berklee College of Music. Clarkson respectfully declined all offers. She was quoted saying, “I’ve already written so much music and wanted to try a career on my own…you’re never too old to go to college.” Upon deciding to chase her dream of becoming a singer, she worked multiple jobs to pay for a demo and recording material. She turned down recording contracts from Jive Records and Interscope Records because she feared those labels would not give her artistic freedom. Clarkson even moved to Los Angeles to further her efforts of getting discovered. Unfortunately, she could not catch a break and eventually moved back to Texas. It was back in Texas where Clarkson auditioned for the inaugural season of American Idol. As most everyone knows, Clarkson won the reality television show and landed a record deal with RCA Records.
Her debut single was “A Moment Like This” which debuted at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100. Breaking a record previously held by the Beatles, her single jumped from number 60 to number 1 within weeks. It eventually went on to become the best-selling single of 2002 in the United States. Her debut album, Thankful was released months later to critical acclaim. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. It is now certified 2X Platinum by the RIAA. Over the next decade, Clarkson released several more successful works. Breakaway (2004) debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 12 million copies worldwide. It also won two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the single “Since U Been Gone”. My December (2007) debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. Next came, All I Ever Wanted (2009), which became Clarkson’s second album to debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200. The album was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards and was ranked number 12 on MTV’s Best Albums of 2009 list. Following All I Ever Wanted came Stronger (2011). Stronger featured the hit single “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”. This single topped the Billboard Hot 100 and attained a top-ten position in over fifteen countries. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” was nominated for three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. The album itself won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Kelly Clarkson continued to churn out successful albums. In 2013 she released Wrapped in Red (2013) which was a holiday album. Then came Piece by Piece (2015). This album was the final piece under her recording contract from winning American Idol. In 2016 she switched to Atlantic Records. Her first album released with Atlantic Records was Meaning of Life (2017). This album was Clarkson’s eighth consecutive studio album to debut in the top three of the Billboard 200. The singles featured on the album included “Love So Soft”, “Move You”, “I Don’t Think About You”, and “Heat”. “Love So Soft” topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and received a nomination at the 60th Grammy Awards. Meaning of Life will be followed up by the Meaning of Life Tour which will begin on January 24th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA. The tour will visit 28 venues across America and will conclude on March 30th at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greensville, SC. Don’t miss out on seeing this powerful vocalist perform live!
