Standout Moments in Kansas City Chiefs History
Lamar Hunt founded the American Football League (AFL) in 1960 after he remained unsuccessful in obtaining a football franchise and was later rebuked by the NFL. He started the league with eight franchises and his own team Dallas Texans was one of them. After playing three successful seasons in Dallas, Hunt moved the franchise to Kansas City in 1963.
1963: Relocation to Kansas City – The newly christened Chiefs became one of the strongest teams in the AFL. Pro Football Hall of Famers Bobby Bell and Buck Buchanan, along with the great Ed Budde were drafted immediately and they spent their entire career wearing the Chiefs red and white jersey. The starters Buchanan, Bell and Budde played the Chiefs first game in history at the Bears Stadium against the Denver Broncos, winning the game 59-7. It jump-started the Chiefs history in Kansas City.
2003: Best Record in First 10 Weeks-The Chiefs entered the new millennium as an NFL powerhouse. They started their 2003 campaign with nine consecutive wins, posting the best record in football through the first ten weeks of the season. The Chiefs won their fifth AFC West title that year with a 13-3 record. Though they eventually lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs, it remains one of the best seasons in the Chiefs history.
1969: Super Bowl IV Glory –The Kansas City Chiefs entered the playoffs as the underdogs. Their rivals Minnesota Vikings were considered the best football team at the time. But the Chiefs turned the tide early on at the Tulane Stadium. Crushing the Vikings offense, the Chiefs took an early 9-0 lead. Led by Otis Taylor and the Hall of Famer, Len Dawson, the Chiefs sealed the win in the third quarter. With 23-7 Super Bowl IV win, the Kansas City Chiefs cemented their name in the history books forever.
Kansas City Chiefs Arch Rivals
Rivalries are among the biggest reasons that make football such an intense and thrilling spectacle. The Chiefs enjoy a fierce rivalry with the Oakland Raiders and the Denver Broncos.
Chiefs-Raiders Rivalry – Born out of mutual dislike and hatred towards each other, it’s one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the sport. At the core, the rivalry began with a tiff between the owners of the two teams, Lamar Hunt and Al Davis. During the AFL-NFL merger, Davis, who was in 1966 named the AFL commissioner, was sidelined and in his place NFL’s Pete Rozelle was made the commissioner of the merged leagues. The rivalry further developed during a bench-clearing brawl in 1970 when Chiefs’ Otis Taylor and Raiders’ Ben Davidson went at each other.
Chiefs-Broncos Rivalry – A rather underrated rivalry, it started when the Kansas City Chiefs played their inaugural game and defeated the Broncos 59-7. The two teams have been facing each other on and off and each time they meet, the hostilities are reignited. In 2016 the Chiefs swept the Broncos and now the stage is set for Denver to take revenge in the 2018 campaign.
Greatest Players in Kansas City Chiefs History
The early Chiefs enjoyed great success with stars Len Dawson, Abner Haynes, Buck Buchanan, Otis Taylor, Ed Budde and Bobby Bell. They led the side to an incredible Super Bowl IV win in 1969.
During the 80s, Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas brought the struggling Kansas City back on track. Forming a fearless defensive front, they steered the Chiefs to extraordinary wins including three (1993, 1995, 1997) AFC West championships.
Willie Roaf is also worth mentioning as his efforts in winning the 2003 AFC West title earned him a Pro Football Hall of Fame induction in 2012.
