John Edmund Mulaney was born in Chicago on August 26, 1982. His father was an attorney, while his mother a law professor at the Northwestern University. He is the third among four siblings.
Mulaney was only seven years old when he had the opportunity to audition for a role in the movie Home Alone. However, at the time, his parents were hesitant to allow him to venture into acting at such a young age and hence declined the offer made to him. Mulaney went on to study at the St. Clement School where instead of report work he would offer to perform a skit to show what he had learnt.
