As a little child Fallon was inclined towards both music and comedy. A caption under his kindergarten photo read, “Most likely to take over for David Letterman,” such were his ambitions right from the start and he worked hard towards achieving them.
Fallon was a fan of “Saturday Night Live” shows even when he was a kid. He would spend hours watching the videos of these shows and would then re-enact in front of his family and friends. In school, he started performing stand-up comedy and also participated in music contests. Jimmy was always a good mimic and he further honed his skills by taking improvisation classes with “The Groundlings.” As he started touring around the country his stand-up routines began to get noticed. His expertise at impersonating celebrities was his strength and that is what gave his career a boost and made him what he is today.
Landing with the Dream Job
As luck would have it, Fallon made his big breakthrough in 1998 and finally got his dream job at the age of only 23. The year started with Fallon making an appearance on the “Spin City”, but his heart was always set on appearing on the “Saturday Night Live.” He auditioned for the show but nothing materialized.
Fallon got another chance to audition for SNL and this time he was adamant to impress the judges. He described this as his ultimate goal. Here is how he expresses his desire to be on SNL,
“If I ever cut into a birthday cake and made a wish, I would wish to be on SNL. If I threw a coin into a fountain, I would wish to be on SNL. If I saw a shooting star, I would wish to be on SNL… I remember saying to myself, 'If I don't make it on [the show] before I'm 25, I'm going to kill myself.' It's crazy. I had no other plan. I didn't have friends, I didn't have a girlfriend, I didn't have anything going on. I had my career that was it.”
The audition was to be a tough one but Fallon went on stage confident and during the show did impressions of Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Bill Cosby, and Adam Sandler. Fallon got a positive response but he couldn’t yet allow himself to be happy until he had heard the magic words from the producer of SNL. Three weeks after the audition, Lorne Michaels, the producer of SNL, called Jimmy Fallon for a meeting to break the good news to him. At the end of the meeting, Fallon promised him that he would make Michaels proud and the following years proved that he kept his promise.
It didn’t take him long to impress the audiences. Soon Jimmy Fallon was a celebrity and the program’s most featured mimic. The fan following started to grow and among them a large following was those of females.
Fallon started Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2009. At first he received mixed reviews, but it didn’t take him long to be at the top. Soon he won over hearts with his boyish charms and the new variation that he gave the show. Fallon added fresh comedy segments apart from the regular interviews. He would play games with guests and sang and dance. His energetic performances and enthusiasm soon made him one of the most popular late-night hosts.
On February 17, 2014, he made his debut as the new host of the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. It attracted 11.3 million views which spoke of his strong standing in the comedy circles. Under him The Tonight Show came alive as he brought his unique charm to the show with his infectious humor that has always been a hit with the masses. It is at the moment one of the highest-rated shows in the “Late Night” slot. No wonder all of Hollywood wants to be with him on this show. Jimmy Fallon is going strong as ever and his star power is growing with each show.
The multi--talented man is also an author, actor, singer and producer. In 1999, he authored “I Hate This Place: The Pessimist’s Guide to Life” with his sister, Gloria and two years later also tried his luck in movies. He has appeared in movies like “Almost Famous” and “Taxi” and in a famous mockumentary “The Rutles 2: Can’t Buy Me Lunch.” He appeared in ads as well and it seemed he was all over the place, appearing in episode of “Star Wars” or other popular television shows including, ‘The Electric Company’, ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘Family Guy’.
Jimmy Fallon has also been the host of MTV Movie Awards and the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards. He wrote the song, ‘Car Wash for Peace’ in 2007 and the money that he got from it was given to charity. He has experimented with various forms of entertainment over the years but he stays best at comedy.
