The Beginning
James William Buffet was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on December 25, 1946. He studied at the Auburn University and then the University of Southern Mississippi where he majored in Journalism. In the late 60s, Buffet decided to move to Nashville to pursue a career as a professional country singer. His debut album Down To Earth hit the shelves in 1970 but largely went unnoticed. Following a failed marriage and disappointing start in the industry, Buffet relocated to Key West. Here the singer developed the beach bum persona which is he is distinctly famous for today. He composed music which was a blend of genres such as country, folk, pop as well as tropical lyrical themes. Buffet uses the term ‘gulf and western’ to describe his music. This is because it carries influences of both the West as well as the Gulf of Mexico coast.
Having discovered his music style, Buffet signed a deal with ABC-Dunhill under which he released the record A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean in 1973. Comprising party songs such as Why Don’t We Get Drunk, the album reached the 43rd spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and earned Buffet a devoted fan base. They seemed to love the carefree atmosphere of the singer’s live shows and soon began wearing Hawaiian shirts when showing up at his concerts. Buffet’s fans are also referred to as the Parrotheads.
Breakthrough
Although Buffet had scored a Top 30 hit with the single Come Monday off the record Living and Dying in 3/4 Time, his commercial breakthrough came with the super hit single Margaritaville from the platinum certified album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.
The record reached the second spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and twelfth on the Billboard 200 while the single Margaritaville charted the eighth position on the Billboard Hot 100 and thirteenth on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. With lyrics reflecting a relaxed lifestyle in a tropical climate, the song has come to define Buffet’s style of music. Over the years, it has become a popular cultural reference, used in titles of Buffet’s own albums as well as songs of other music artists such as Blake Shelton’s single Some Beach.
Owing to its historical and cultural significance, Margaritaville was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016.
