Early Life & Influences
Born in 1969 to Puerto Rican parents in The Bronx, New York, Jennifer Lopez is said to be inspired by legendary names like Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Barbra Streisand.
Jennifer Lopez grew up with the dreams of making it big in the entertainment industry. She started to take singing and dancing classes at the age of five. Although she was good at sports, Lopez remained true to her dreams and before long, she appeared as Myra in the film, ‘My Little Girl’ which came out in 1986. She later dropped out of Baruch College and moved to Manhattan to become an actress. Soon, she starred in the musicals, ‘Oklahoma!’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.’
In 1991, Jennifer Lopez was selected as the backup dancer for the American pop group, New Kids on the Block. After that, she was hired as a Fly Girl dancer on the Emmy winning television series, ‘In Living Color.’ She slowly found mainstream success as an actress in the early 90s as she appeared in famous films like ‘Money Train,’ ‘Jack’ and ‘Blood and Wine.’
Jennifer Lopez continued to make it big in Hollywood before she spawned her first single, If You Had My Love in May of 1999. This track launched her career as a recording artist. It went on to sell more than a million copies in the United States and reached first spot on the Billboard Hot 100, ARIA Charts and Canadian Hot 100. The song also got her five Billboard Music Award nominations.
Breakthrough & Recognition
In less than a month later, Jennifer Lopez came out with her debut record, ‘On the Six.’ The album made her a pop sensation as it went three times platinum in the United States. It comprised of fourteen upbeat tracks including, Waiting for Tonight. The song reached top ten in multiple countries including Finland, Italy, Australia and France. It also earned her first Grammy nomination in the category of ‘Best Dance Recording.’
In addition, ‘On the Six’ got the critics raving. Many publications gave the record positive reviews including Rolling Stone, which praised Lopez’s conservative attitude to her music in words,
“The happy surprise of On the 6 is that she knows what she's doing. Instead of strained vocal pyrotechnics, Lopez sticks to the understated R&B murmur of a round-the-way superstar who doesn't need to belt because she knows you're already paying attention.”
Pop music fans now wanted more from her and on January 23, 2001, Jenifer Lopez dropped new music in the form of her second album, ‘J.Lo.’ It is one of her bestselling studio effort to date as it racked up sales of over four million in the United States alone. Moreover, it landed at the first spot on the Billboard 200 and gave singles, Love Don’t Cost a Thing and I’m Real both of which were awarded platinum certification by the ARIA.
After one year, Lopez returned with her third studio record, ‘This is Me… Then.’ Heavily influenced by soul and R&B sound, this record displays her excellent songwriting skills. Although, all of her songs from the album became huge hits, there were two that became fan favorite, All I Have and I’m Glad. The latter earned her four MTV Video Music Award nominations for ‘Best Female Video,’ ‘Best Dance Video,’ ‘Best Choreography in a Video’ and ‘Best Art Direction in a Video.’ The album also received four stars out of five from AllMusic.
Jennifer Lopez did not slow down and followed-up with the release of ‘Rebirth,’ ‘Como Ama una Mujer,’ ‘Brave’ and ‘Love?’ At the same time, she acted in movies like, ‘The Back-up Plan,’ ‘Monster –in-Law’ and ‘Shall We Dance?’ all of which were approved by the critics.
