Johnny Reed McKinzie Jr., otherwise known as Jay Rock, was born on March 31, 1985 in Watts, Los Angeles, California. Growing up he was a gang member of the Bounty Hunter Bloods which is a subset of the Bloods. He attended Locke High School and during this time was jailed on two separate occasions due to gang related charges. Jay Rock had a passion for rapping and was found by Top Dawg Entertainment’s CEO, Anthony Tiffith. Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) helped Jay Rock release a few mixtapes and then land a contract with Asylum Records.
Beginnings of Career
The first single that Jay Rock released for his debut album was called “All My Life (In the Ghetto). This track was released in 2008 and featured rappers Lil Wayne and will.i.am. The second single he released for his debut album was “Hood Gone Love It”. This single was released three years after the first one and it featured fellow TDE rapper Kendrick Lamar. A month later Jay Rock finally released his debut album which was titled Follow Me Home (2011). Follow Me Home was released under independent record labels Strange Music and TDE. It debuted at number 83 on the Billboard 200.
A Promising Future
In October of 2012, Jay Rock was featured on Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed album good kid, m.A.A.d city, specifically on the track “Money Trees”. Kendrick, and subsequently Jay Rock, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year for good kid, m.A.A.d city in 2014. That same year, Jay Rock left Strange Records and was signed to only TDE. With TDE, he released his second studio album, 90059. This album featured numerous artists including Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Isaiah Rashad, SIR, Lance Skiiwalker, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, and Busta Rhymes. A few years later, in January of 2018, Jay Rock collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake on the track “King’s Dead” which was a part of the Black Panther soundtrack. This track also serves as the lead single for his upcoming album which is set to be released on June 15, 2018.
Jay Rock’s career is in its early stages but he is on the track to be a very successful rapper. He is part of Black Hippy which is a rap group consisting of all-star rappers Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, and himself.
