Early Life

Jason Mraz was born on June 23, 1977 in Mechanicsville, Virginia and spent his entire childhood there. He attended Lee-Dais High School where he was on the cheerleading squad and part of the chorus. After graduating high school, Mraz when to New York City where he attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. He remained there for about a year and a half before returning to his hometown in Virginia. Shortly after he went on a road trip to San Diego. Once he arrived in San Diego he decided he would stay there. In San Diego, Mraz would perform his acoustic music at a coffee house called Java Joe’s. This helped him garner a fanbase in San Diego which would help his first studio album become successful.

Waiting for My Rocket to Come

Mraz signed with Elektra Records in 2002 and with this label Mraz released his debut album. The album was Waiting for My Rocket to Come and peaked at number 55 on the Billboard 200. “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” was the first single for the album and ended up being Mraz’s first hit single. The track peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. After two years, Waiting for My Rocket to Come was certified platinum by the RIAA.

Mr. A–Z

Mraz’s second studio album was titled Mr. A–Z which was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200. The lead single for the album, “Wordplay”, peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mr. A–Z earned two Grammy nominations including Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Producer of the Year (for Steve Lillywhite).

It was released on May 12, 2008 and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200, which was Mraz’s highest charting album at the time. The album eventually became certified 3X Platinum by the RIAA. “I’m Yours” was the album’s lead single and became a massive hit. The single peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 76 weeks on the chart. “I’m Yours” ultimately became certified 7X Platinum by the RIAA. The two other singles off the album were “Make It Mine” and “Lucky” (feat. Colbie Caillat). At the 2010 Grammy Awards “Make It Mine” won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and “Lucky” won Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Love Is a Four Letter Word and Yes!

Mraz’s fourth studio album dropped on April 12, 2012, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard 200. The album was titled Love Is a Four Letter Word and featured the hit lead single “I Won’t Give Up”. “I Won’t Give Up” debuted at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became certified 4X Platinum by the RIAA. The album received a Grammy nomination at the 55th Grammy Awards in 2013 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Also in 2013, Mraz won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Male Artist.

Yes! was Mraz’s fifth studio album and first acoustic album. Mraz collaborated with female group Raining Jane; Raining Jane is his backing band on the record and they co-wrote almost all the songs together. The album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200.

Waitress and Know

In 2017, Jason Mraz shifted musical gears and announced he would be hitting the Broadway stage in the musical Waitress. The music and lyrics for Waitress were done by Sara Bareilles who had worked with Mraz in the past. Mraz played Dr. Pomatter for a 10-week run. He was joined in the cast by Bareilles during this run.
