Arriving onto the Scene
Born as Jason Joel Desrouleaux in Miramar, Florida, Jason Derulo grew up with a strong interest in music. By the age of eight, he was penning his first song. He slowly began to hone his skills as a lyricist and spent much of his teenage years writing songs for artists including, Sean Kingston, Diddy, Cassie, Danity Kane, Lil Wayne and Donnie Klang. Derulo even wrote a track titled, Bossy for the BET Award winning rapper, Birdman. At the same time, he attended two performing arts schools and featured in theatre productions like, ‘Smokey Joe’s Café’ and ‘Ragtime.’
In 2006, Jason Derulo soon participated in the syndicated music television show, ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ and won. He later caught the attention of Johannesburg-based record producer, J.R. Rotem who quickly signed him to his label, Beluga Heights Records. Derulo without wasting time hit the studio and kicked off his singing career by dropping his first single, Watcha Say on August 4, 2009. Jason Derulo didn’t slow down and came out with his second studio effort, ‘Future History’ on September 16, 2011. This album debuted at the twenty ninth spot on the Billboard 200 and was produced by some of the best record producers, including The Fliptones, RedOne, DJ Frank E and Emanuel Kiriakou. Moreover, it collected mixed reviews from the critics and received three stars out of five from AllMusic, Rolling Stone and Digital Spy each.
‘Future History’ contained twelve songs, out of which six were released as singles, namely Don’t Wanna Go Home, It Girl, Breathing, Fight For You, Undefeated and Pick Up the Pieces. Don’t Wanna Go Home was awarded multi-platinum certification by the ARIA and climbed the first spot on the UK Singles chart. It Girl also became extremely popular in Australia where it sold in excess of six million copies and reached the top-ten singles chart in New Zealand, Ireland, United Kingdom and Denmark. The album’s third single, Breathing peaked at the ninth spot on the UK R&B chart and was covered by the English singer and model, Cher Lloyd.
On September 20, 2013, Jason Derulo put out his third studio effort, ‘Tattoos.’ This record is responsible for making him a star in Europe as it turned out to be a massive hit in many countries throughout the continent and collected mostly positive reviews from the critics. It produced seven singles including, Talk Dirty and Trumpets out of which the former topped the charts in UK, Australia, Belgium and Germany. Jason Derulo’s fourth studio LP, ‘Everything is 4’ hit the shelves on May 29, 2015. The album became his highest charting effort to date as it landed at the fourth spot on the Billboard 200 and garnered positive reviews from the critics. It went gold in the US and featured guest appearances from artists like, K. Michelle, Meghan Trainor, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez and Julia Michaels. The album was preceded by the lead single, Want to Want Me which was certified multi-platinum in six countries and was included in Time’s ‘Best Songs of 2015’ list.
