The Indiana Fever entered the WNBA as an expansion team prior to the 2000 season, and they are the sister team of the NBA's Indiana Pacers. The Fever have fought hard throughout their time in the league, and all of that hard work finally paid off with a WNBA Championship victory in 2012.
It’s a Long Road to the Top
The fever got out to a slow start when they joined the league, failing to make the playoffs in four of their first five seasons and only breaking .500 once. Star player Tamika Catchings, who had been drafted to the team in 2001, suffered a series of unfortunate injuries that hindered both her and the team. Right off the bat, a torn ACL kept her out of the 2001 season, a foot injury took her out of the second half of the regular season in 2007, and a torn Achilles tendon in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals later that same season ended the team’s quest for a championship.
Things started looking up for the Indiana Fever in 2009 when they won their first Eastern Conference Championship and made their first Finals appearance, but the team once again fell short. It wasn’t until 2012 (after another disappointing Finals loss in 2011) that the Fever would finally make their dreams come true by beating the Minnesota Lynx 3-1 in the championship series to claim their first WNBA title.
