It is that time of the year again when iHeartRadio, its president, Tom Poleman and Z100 bring to you the immensely popular Jingle Ball.
The first ever Z100 Jingle Ball was held in 1995 in New York and later visited other cities including Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia and Sacramento. The Jingle Ball Tour, however, didn’t start till 2010, which was when Bob Pittman, MTV’s co-founder and media veteran joined Clear Channel – iHeartRadio’s public subsidiary.
Jingle Ball Tour finally kicked off in 2013 from Dallas. The annual holiday season pop concert that broke ground from New York’s Madison Square Garden became a nationwide touring franchise. Today, more than 13 sister concerts have been launched and while they all share the Jingle Ball name, each is supported by a regional pop station and has a different lineup.
Jingle Ball tickets have hit the market and with so many top billed artists performing under the banner, are selling out fast. The biggest event on the itinerary is none other than the original Z100 Jingle Ball featuring Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran as the headliners.
Jingle Ball Franchise – Overview
The idea for Jingle Ball concert where several artists perform on one ticket was inspired from the work of Murray the K, pop radio legend. An influential DJ and rock n roll impresario, he produced shows during the late 50s and early 60s that featured a multi-racial, eclectic lineup. Taking place at the Brooklyn Fox Theater, performances were held during the holiday season and extended till the New Year.
Tom Poleman used the same format, but made it a grand one by raising the production level. With various artists performing, a rotating stage is erected that allows the team to set up multiple stages so that no time is wasted between the performances.
The inaugural Z100’s Jingle Ball took off in 1995 from New York. The debut lineup included big names like Alanis Morrissette, Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews Band, Goo Goo Dolls, Collective Soul, Natalie Merchant and Soul Asylum. Since then the event has not just expanded to cities, but also the genres represented at the shows have changed, keeping in mind the taste of the fans.
Popular for introducing new artists, Jingle Ball gave Justin Timberlake the opportunity to use its platform to kick start his career. In 2005, Kanye West made his Jingle Ball debut when his music career was only one album old.
Jingle Ball – Pop Music Spectacular
With numerous shows spurring all over the country supporting the Jingle Ball insignia, the Madison Square Garden event remains the biggest and most popular. Why? Because it’s the original Z100’s Jingle Ball that paved way for all the other shows.
The 2017 iHeart Jingle Ball New York event will feature the biggest lineup ever – the Fearless Taylor Swift and the Thing Out Loud crooner, Ed Sheeran! Spanning over two days, the concerts will also bring to stage The Chainsmokers, Sam Smith, James Hype, Matt Terry, and Stefflon Don.
Ed Sheeran is really excited about his performance, stating “It’s a really, really good show to go to and definitely massive value for money because you get to see ten or eleven acts that all can fill that arena”.
He’s even more thrilled to be performing under the same roof as Taylor Swift and is hoping he’ll be able to drag her into watching some rock act live after their respective sets.
