Standout Moments in Houston Rockets History

The First NBA Championship - When talking about the most unforgettable moments in Houston Rockets’ history, you simply cannot look past their rise to the top of the summit the first time. It was the season of 1993-1994 when the Rockets became the team to beat in the NBA.

The Rockets were up against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals and it was a pulsating series. The Knicks were up 3-2 in the series and needed just one more win to land their third NBA title. The series then moved to The Summit in Houston for the final two encounters and the Rockets made home support count. After winning Game 6 by a score of 86-84, the Rockets came out on top 90-84 on June 22, 1994, to bring the title to Houston for the first time ever.

Another NBA Title - The Houston Rockets began the 1994-1995 season as the NBA Champions for the first time in their history. The pressure was immense and everyone wanted to see how they would cope. The Rockets answered all those questions by winning their second successive title.

The Houston Rockets took on the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals and romped to victory 4-0. Game 4 was played at The Summit on June 14, 1995, and the Rockets won the game 113-101 to sweep the Magic and win another NBA Championship. It remains their last title to date.

The Houston Rockets Rivals

The two Houston Rockets rivals that standout are the San Antonio Spurs and of course the Dallas Mavericks.

Rockets-Spurs Rivalry - The rivalry between the Houston Rockets and the San Antonio Spurs is also known as the “I-10 Rivalry” since both cities are on Interstate 10. The rivalry kicked off in 1976 when the Spurs left the American Basketball Association to move to the NBA. The two sides squared off almost immediately for Division supremacy.

The Rockets drew first blood by winning the Division crown in 1977 but the Spurs then bounced back to win it in 1978 and 1979. This was the moment when the rivalry started. The Rockets and the Spurs have met each other in the playoffs in 22 games out of which the Rockets have won 12. The Spurs lead the head to head regular season record 106-83.

Rockets-Mavericks Rivalry - The Houston Rockets as well as the Dallas Mavericks, both lie on Interstate 45 and that is why the rivalry between these two sides is dubbed the “I-45 Rivalry”. The rivalry between the Rockets and the Mavericks began when the latter joined the NBA in the 1980-1981 season. The Rockets came out on top in all six of their meetings in the Mavericks’ first year.

The two sides met in the playoffs for the first time in 1988 and the Mavericks won the series 3-1. The overall postseason record is 8-8, whereas in regular season the Rockets lead 90-81.

The Toyota Center

The Toyota Center provides Rockets fans with an award winning viewing experience. The arena is the winner of the Allen Award for Civic Enhancement by Central Houston in 2003, "Rookie of the Year" by the Harlem Globetrotters in 2004 and a finalist for Pollstar Magazine's "Best New Concert Venue" award. The arena's playing surface is set 32-feet below street level giving Toyota Center the largest lower level of any arena in the nation, which attributes the noise level that occurs every Rocket game. Coupled with the exclusive Lexus Lounge, trendy Woodforest Club, Red and White Bistro's superior food and service, your Rockets tickets not only send you to a game but also to five star night out.

Fleetwood Mac performed at the Toyota Center on October 6, 2003, and that was the first ever event to be held at the venue. Superstars like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira, Gloria Estefan, Rihanna, Nickelback, Andrea Bocelli, Enrique Iglesias, Katy Perry, Cher and Drake have performed at the Toyota Center over the years. It has also hosted the Latin Grammy Awards and four UFC events have also taken place at the Toyota Center.

The Greatest Houston Rockets Players in History

The greatest Houston Rockets player of all time by many accounts has to be Hakeem Olajuwon. He led them to two NBA Championships and was the NBA Finals MVP on both occasions. He also made twelve All Star appearances, made it to six All-NBA First Teams and has had his number 34 retired by the franchise.

Moses Malone also ranks among the greatest Houston Rockets players in history. He was picked five time for the NBA All Star side as a member of the Rockets and has had his number 24 retired by the Houston Rockets. Rudy Tomjanovich is another Houston Rockets great. He was a five time NBA All-Star with the Rockets and also led them to their two NBA titles to date. The Rockets have retired Tomjanovich’s number 45 as well.
