Childhood and Early Music
Born in Worcestershire, England, in 1994, Styles first got involved in music through a school singing competition. He, along with his band, White Eskimo, won the band competition at their school. In 2010, at just 16 years of age, Styles took part in the seventh season of the television show, The X Factor. While on the show, he sang “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder and “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” by Oasis. He was eliminated before the finals as a solo act. However, in a surprise move by the judges Simon Cowell and guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, Styles was made a part of a boy group, along with fellow contestants, Niall Horan, Louis Tomilson, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik.
The newly put together group was then named ‘One Direction’ by Styles.
The five-boy band became one of the most popular acts on the show and finished third. Soon after the show, they were signed on to Simon Cowell’s music label, Syco and began recording. Being the youngest member of the group, with a charming personality, curly hair and a wide smile, Styles quickly became a fan favorite.
The band’s debut album, Up All Night, was released in 2011 and was met with a highly positive response in both the UK and the US. The lead single from this album, “What Makes You Beautiful” peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart in September 2011. The second album, Take Me Home, was released in 2012. In another highlight for 2012, the band got to perform at the closing ceremony of the Olympics in London.
One Direction released its third album, Midnight Memories in November 2013, and the fourth one, Four, in 2014. Following the release of their fifth album, Made in the A.M. in November 2015, One Direction decided to go on a hiatus.
Styles Going Solo
In the start of 2016, Harry Styles signed a solo contract with Columbia Records, the same label behind One Direction. Styles debut album was recorded throughout 2016 in multiple locations, including California and London. The first solo single by Styles was released on 7th April, 2017 and was called “Sign of the Times”. Soon after its release, the single reached the top of the UK Singles Chart. The song was described by critics as a soft rock song with elements of glam rock, quite like the music of David Bowie and Queen.
The self-titled debut album was released in May 2017 and debuted at number one in several major markets, including the UK, US and Australia. The album was applauded by critics and described by Variety as a “classic cocktail of psychedelia, Britpop, and balladry”. Rolling Stone was also all praises for Styles’ work, saying that the young star had claimed “his turf as a true rock & roll prince, a sunshine superman, a cosmic dancer in touch with his introspective acoustic side as well as his glam flash.”
The upcoming tour that will go on all the way till July 2018 will be in support of this album. A second leg was added to the tour due to a very high demand of tickets.
In July of 2017, Styles made an entry into the field of acting. He played a British soldier in the World War II movie called Dunkirk. His acting performance was very warmly received by film critics with The Daily Telegraph praising his “bright, convicted, and unexpectedly not-at-all-jarring performance".
