out and as a result, was kicked out of her home by her parents. To make ends meet, Halsey began focusing on her poetry and writings. The song “Ghost” was recorded and posted on SoundCloud soon after, during this time.
Breakthrough and Early Music
“Ghost” was a big breakthrough for her, for her career and life in general, which was deep in financial woes by this time. The song gained a lot of attention on SoundCloud within hours of being posted and she was soon contacted by multiple record labels. The song was eventually released as part of her debut album, Badlands. The YouTube video for this song has received more than 47 million views to date.
Soon after the initial success of “Ghost”, Halsey signed on to Astralwerks Records and began working on her first album. At the same time, the synth-pop singer also toured with The Kooks. Her debut EP titled Room 93 was released in 2014 and charted on the Billboard 200. However, it did exceptionally well on the Top Heatseekers chart.
Halsey’s debut album, Badlands was released in August 2015. She co-wrote all the songs with the production being handled by her then-boyfriend, Lido. Talking about this album, Halsey said that it was a concept album regarding a dystopian society which was a metaphor for her state of mind at the time. Badlands debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold 97,000 copies in the first week of its release. As of April 2017, the album had sold more than 504,000 copies in the US and had also achieved a Platinum certification by the RIAA. The album was also successful in other countries such as the UK, where it debuted at number nine.
Soon after the release of this album, Halsey went on the Badlands Tour in 2015 and 2016 and also supported the record as the opening act for a few dates of The Weeknd’s 2015 tour.
Halsey’s rise to fame continued as she collaborated with multiple artists, including Justin Bieber and The Chainsmokers. She collaborated with the latter on the single “Closer” in 2016. This single became one of the most successful songs of the entire year and ended up earning both the artists their first top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also received several awards and accolades, along with a nomination for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
