In their heydays, this Los Angeles based hard rock band reminded its fans of “hedonistic rebelliousness” reminiscent of the Rolling Stones. Is it any wonder that Guns N’ Roses infamously earned the title of “the most dangerous band in the world”. Guns N’ Roses, like the Rolling Stones before them, have however moved on from their eighties and early nineties and today are considered to be one of the most seasoned and mature hard rock bands in the world. They are certainly one of the most successful, with over 100 million global record sales.
Guns N’ Roses are currently headlining the Not in This Lifetime… Tour. While the band has headlined many such tours, what makes this special is its lineup – for the first time since 1993, the band’s classic lineup members Axl Rose, Duff McKagan and Slash are performing together.
If you want to see these Rock and Roll Hall of Famers on their current tour, then get your Guns N Roses tickets from here.
Early Years & Influences
Guns N Roses was formed in 1985 in Los Angeles, California. The original lineup consisted of Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Steven Adler and Izzy Stradlin. Over the years, the band has undergone many lineup changes and today consists of in addition to Rose, Slash and McKagan, Melissa Reese, Frank Ferrer, Richard Fortus and Dizzy Reed.
Guns N’ Roses’ music is a beautiful and perfectly balanced fusion of punk rock, hair metal, hard rock, heavy metal and blues rock. According to Axl Rose, the band is heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Queen, Rose Tattoo and Aerosmith. Interestingly, Joe Perry of Aerosmith says that when he first heard of Guns N’ Roses, they reminded him of Led Zeppelin. The band credits Led Zeppelin and other bands for having the biggest influence on their debut album, Appetite for Destruction.
Breakthrough & Recognition
Guns N’ Roses’ rise has been meteoric – they were signed to a major record label within eight months of their inception. The band’s breakthrough album was Appetite for Destruction, also their debut album, which still holds the record for being the highest-selling debut album of all time in the US.
Famous Albums & Songs
Appetite for Destruction was released in 1987. It debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 and also charted in Canada and many European countries. The album has been certified Diamond in the US and to date has sold more than 30 million records worldwide. While the album received mixed reviews from the critics, Ann Powers of The Rolling Stone Album Guide noted that the album “changed hard rock’s sensibilities at the time.” The Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album as the 27th best album of the 1980s. Appetite for Destruction spawned some of Guns N Roses biggest hit singles such as “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” “Paradise City,” “Nightrain” and “Welcome to the Jungle.”
In 1988, the band’s second studio album G N’ R Lies was released. The album debuted at No.2 on the Billboard 200 and sold over million records and was therefore certified five time Platinum in the US. Some of the biggest hits in this album were “Patience,” “One in a Million” and “Used to Love Her.”
Guns N’ Roses’ next two albums were among the most anticipated in rock history. On September 17, 1991, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, the third and fourth albums were released. Interestingly, while both albums were certified 7×Platinum in the US, Use Your Illusion I debuted at No.2, while Use Your Illusion II, debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200. “November Rain,” “Civil War,” “Don’t Cry” and “You Could Be Mine”, a few singles from these albums, turned out to be the biggest chartbusters of their time. The last song was featured in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
In 1993, Guns N’ Roses released another blockbuster album, titled “The Spaghetti Incident?” The album debuted at No.4 on the Billboard 200 and sold in excess of one million records. A certified Platinum album in the US, it included hits “Since I Don’t Have You” and “Ain’t It Fun.”
Chinese Democracy was released in 2008. The band’s sixth studio album, it debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 and garnered favorable reviews from critics. The album sold over one million records and was certified Platinum in the US. Chinese Democracy marked the beginning of a change in the band’s musical direction – it was more nu metal, electronic rock and industrial rock as compared to their previous body of work. Writing for the Rolling Stone, David Fricke noted that the album was “a great, audacious, unhinged and uncompromising hard-rock record.” “This I Love,” “Chinese Democracy” and “Street of Dreams” were some of the biggest hits from the album.
Guns N’ Roses in 2017
The Not in This Lifetime… Tour kick started on April 1, 2016, and the last concert of the tour is scheduled for November 29, 2017. An ongoing series of concerts, the Not in This Lifetime… Tour has already been declared the tenth highest-grossing concert tour of all-time.
The biggest attraction of this tour is not how much money it has already made, but a chance to see the classic lineup on stage once again - Axl Rose, Duff McKagan and Slash.
