From the time G. Love & Special Sauce released their self-titled debut album in 1994, featuring fan favorites like “Cold Beverages” and “Baby’s Got Sauce,” audiences became intoxicated by the Philly-bred band’s blues-rock flair. Over the next 20+ years, the trio would go on to release seven more LPs before taking a break after 2008’s Superhero Brother. However, after a six-year break, the band is back with a brand-new album, Sugar, and summer tour featuring Slightly Stoopid.
“I try to stay away from the three compound words that can destroy any recording session for me: sonically correct, radio-friendly, and commercially viable,” G. Love said of his songwriting approach in a recent interview with NoiseTrade.com. “Over the years I’ve sometimes tried to cater to one or more of those curse words, but it’s always been to limited success and it was always a let down.” Part of what makes G. Love so exciting to watch is the fact that he’s open to making mistakes; in fact, it’s this kind of musical “sloppiness” that’s made him famous in jam-band circles. Whether he’s fingerpicking on the guitar or using his feet to control the tambourine stomp pedal, the singer’s performance is one that involves his full body’s participation. “It’s a lot of fun when I get up there and I do get in that zone and lose on it,” G. Love told Guitar World Magazine. “It never ceases to amaze me ‘cause I do these solo shows and I swear to God, people dance harder to solo shows then when I have the whole band there.”
