Early Life and Career Beginnings
Diplo was born as Thomas Wesley Pentz on November 10, 1978 in Tupelo, Mississippi. He spent a lot of his younger years in Miami where he experienced the Miami bass sound. Diplo attended University of Central Florida and then transferred to Temple University to complete his degree. Diplo and fellow DJ Low Budget formed a duo and called themselves Hooked on Hollertronix. Hollertronix would throw parties in the Philadelphia music scene. This opportunity allowed the two to release mixtapes together and separately. The mixtapes spread across the country and garnered the two young DJs a fanbase. One of these mixtapes was called Never Scared and was named on as one of New York Times top ten albums of 2003. After the success of Hooked on Hollertronix, Diplo built “The Mausoleum” in Philadelphia. “The Mausoleum” was a video studio, recording studio, record label office, gallery, and event space.
Working with M.I.A.
One night when Diplo was performing at the Fabric Club in London, M.I.A. walked in on a set featuring two of her songs. She immediately wanted to meet him. The two artists had very similar tastes in music and eventually collaborated on a mixtape called Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1. This mixtape was mentioned by the New York Times and Pitchfork Media as ‘Albums of the Year’. Diplo and M.I.A. continued to work together and eventually created the hit track “Paper Planes”. “Paper Planes” reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the biggest hit songs in the country.
Diplo teamed up with English DJ, Switch, to form the group known as Major Lazer. Under this guise, Major Lazer produced a full-length studio album called Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do in 2009. The album was critically acclaimed in the EDM community. One of the tracks from the album called “Pon De Floor” was sampled for Beyoncé’s hit single “Run the World (Girls)”. Switch left Major Lazer in 2011 and was replaced by Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. The new members and Diplo released a second album for Major Lazer called Free the Universe (2013). This album features countless other popular artists and it peaked at number 34 on the Billboard 200. The next album by Major Lazer dropped on June 1, 2015 and was titled Peace Is the Mission. Peace Is the Mission featured even more popular artists including DJ Snake, Ellie Goulding, Travis Scott, 2 Chainz, Pusha T, and Ariana Grande. “Lean On” was the lead single for the album. It broke the record for Spotify’s Most Streamed Songs of All Time with over 800 million streams. The single would eventually become certified double platinum by the RIAA. Major Lazer is rumored to have a fourth studio album to be released sometime in 2018.
Diplo is part of another EDM group called Jack Ü. Jack Ü is made up of Diplo and Skrillex. In 2015, the duo released Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü, their first studio album under their new guise. The album peaked at number 26 on the Billboard 200 and in 2016 won a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. The second single from the album was “Where Are Ü Now” (feat. Justin Bieber). This track became a huge hit and peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Where Are Ü Now” earned Jack Ü and Justin Bieber a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
