Early Life & Influences
Depeche Mode are influenced by legendary names like, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, The Beatles, Sex Pistols and Leonard Cohen.
Depeche Mode’s origin dates to 1977 when schoolmates, Vince Clarke and Andy Fletcher formed a band, “No Romance in China.” The group did not last for long and three years later, Clarke formed another band, “Composition of Sound” with Fletcher and Martin Gore. Shortly afterwards, Clarke developed passion for electronic music when he listened to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. As a result, Clarke and Fletcher turned to synthesizers. The duo later recruited Dave Gahan as the fourth member of the group and Depeche Mode was born.
They started to perform and during one of their performances at the Bridge House in Canning Town, they were approached by the founder of Mute Records, Daniel Miller. He wanted them to record a single for his label and the result was Dreaming of Me which Depeche Mode released in 1981. The track debuted at the fifty seventh spot on the UK Singles Chart. It slowly started to become more popular in their native country of England and that encouraged Depeche Mode to release their second single, New Life. Influenced by synthpop sound, the track peaked at the eleventh spot on the UK Singles Chart and also appeared on the British music chart television program, “Top of the Pops.”
In September of 1981, Depeche mode released their third single, Just Can’t Get Enough which became the band’s first UK top ten hit. They followed that up by releasing their debut record, “Speak & Spell” in October of the same year. The record was a big hit in Europe and was certified gold in the UK, Germany and Sweden. The band continued to make waves by releasing records like, “A Broken Frame,” “Construction of Time” and “Some Great Reward.” These studio efforts were all critical hits.
