Dear Evan Hansen is a musical about a young guy with a social anxiety disorder. The play is about a very sensitive topic and it required a lot of courage from people behind Dear Evan Hansen to even think about taking it on, let alone converting it into such a breathtaking musical.

The musical stole the show at the seventy first edition of the Tony Awards by winning a whopping six awards.

Now that it has taken over Broadway, Dear Evan Hansen tickets are in very high demand. If you are a theater fan, then make your way to the Music Box Theatre and watch this modern day classic, live. It is an experience you will not get over for quite a while.

Overview

Dear Evan Hansen is not your traditional musical. The play is about the protagonist Evan Hansen who does not have the most comfortable life. He suffers from social anxiety which affects him in school and his social life. On top of that, he has to deal with issues at home, especially when it comes to his mother. The finances are tight and Hansen also has a broken arm to deal with.

Then Connor Murphy, one of the students in his school commits suicide and that unfortunate incident changes Hansen’s life. Due to weird circumstances, people start to think of him as a close friend of the late Connor Murphy. He starts to get importance and even gets close to Murphy’s family. He starts to get the importance and social acceptability that he had always craved. It however gets very hard for him to maintain the charade.

To come up with a musical as good as Dear Evan Hansen and that too on such a serious subject shows the credibility and the talent of not only the performers but the creative team as well. Hansen’s double life and all the emotional trauma he faces as a result is extremely moving.

Dear Evan Hansen-Original Score

Since Dear Evan Hansen is a musical, there are plenty of songs that are very intricately linked with the characters and the storyline. The cast recording of the Broadway production came out on February 3, 2017. People who pre-ordered the album got the chance to download the track “waving Through a Window” before the release of the recording.

It debuted at the eighth spot on the Billboard 200 to record the best debut by a cast recording since Camelot way back in 1961. According to Billboard, the sales figures also put it on the third spot on the list of the best debuts by a cast recording over the past twenty five years. Not only that, but Dear Evan Hansen was also the fourth cast recording to reach the top ten of the Billboard 200 in the last half-century.

Dear Evan Hansen-Cast

A lot of the success that has been enjoyed by Dear Evan Hansen is because of the performances by its stellar cast. Ben Platt plays the role of Evan Hansen on Broadway, just like he did in the debut production of the play in Washington and its Off-Broadway run. Platt is exceptional in the musical and it is his performances that lend credibility to Evan Hansen.

Laura Dreyfuss is Zoe Murphy, the sister of the late Connor Murphy and Evan Hansen’s love interest. Laura’s performances are nothing short of impeccable. Rachel Bay Jones is Heidi Hansen, Evan Hansen’s mother. She has arguments with her son on a regular basis because she struggles to understand what he is going through.  That puts a strain on their relationship that reaches breaking point.

Jennifer Laura Thompson and Michael Park play the roles of Cynthia Murphy and Larry Murphy respectively, the parents of Connor and Zoe. Cynthia struggles to get over the death of her son while Larry who had never been emotionally attached to his family, gets close to Evan.

The lives of all the characters are intertwined and the fact they all have different issues to deal with, makes Dear Evan Hansen a complex yet beautifully directed musical.
