The Beginning

Darius Rucker was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on May, 13, 1966. As a child he paid frequent visits to the church with his family and over the years grew a fondness for music. This led him to perform in the high school choirs. However, it was during his time at the University of South Carolina that Rucker decided to pursue a professional career in music.

In 1986, he formed the band Hootie & the Blowfish with friends Mark Bryan, Dean Felber and Jim Sonefeld. Named after two classmates at the University of South Carolina, the band played the college circuit for numerous years and earned a strong fan base.

Upon graduation, the quartet began touring extensively and managed to earn little money and free beer via their gigs.

Hootie & the Blowfish

With Darius Ricker as the front man, Hootie and the Blowfish made their debut in the music industry with the self-financed EP Kootchypop. The musicians started off by distributing its copies at their live shows. In a short time, they were able to sell over 50,000 copies which was an impressive feat for a self-financed band. Their popularity led a talent scout of the Atlantic Records to approach them and soon they were signed by the label.

Hootie & the Blowfish released the record Cracked Rear View in 1994. The album shot to the number one spot, featuring hits such as I Only Want To Be With You, Let Her Cry, Time and Hold My Hand. Rucker’s baritone voice complemented the band’s bluesy harmonica solos, producing a unique sound that got the listeners hooked instantly. The album won two Grammys and went on to become one of the bestselling all-time albums in the US.

Hootie & the Blowfish continued to entertain the fans during the 1990s and the 2000s. Their last album before going on a hiatus was Looking for Lucky

Solo Career

Having sung several pop rock songs as a member of Hootie & the Blowfish, Darius Rucker decided to go solo with an R&B album Back to Then. The record came out in 2002, while Rucker was still performing as part of the band.

Few years later, Rucker decided to make his debut into the unexplored territory of country music. His first country music effort Learn to Live was a massive hit. Its first single Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It reached the Top 20 on the Billboard chart and earned Rucker an invite to the Grand Ole Opry. With this album, Rucker became the first country singer whose first three singles reached the number one spot. Learn to Live was widely praised by the critics and earned Rucker two nominations at the Country Music Association Awards.

His career as a country music artist continued to flourish with the album Charleston, SC 1966. It debuted at the top spot on the Top Country Albums chart and second on the US Billboard 200. The record’s first week sales exceeded 100,000 copies.

The success of Charleston, SC 1966 was followed up by the album True Believers in 2013. Its single Wagon Wheel reached the number one spot on the Country Airplay chart and won the singer a Grammy for the Best Country Solo Performance.

The lead single Homegrown Honey off Rucker’s sixth studio album Southern Style was released on country radio in August of 2014 and became a major hit. The album itself came out the following year and received a tremendous response. It won the British Country Music Association Award for the International Album of the Year.

The release of the country singer’s latest music record When Was The Last Time was preceded by its number one single If I Told You. The album hit the shelves in October, 2017, and is already making waves in the country music world.
