Cody Johnson has done things his own way. He has made his mark without the backing of a major record label and considering the dynamics of the music industry, that is not an easy thing to do. Yes, Johnson has had to grind it out along the way but then that makes all the success he is currently enjoying all the more enjoyable.
Cody Johnson is without a doubt one of the fastest rising country stars on the circuit right now. From being a prison guard to now ruling the charts, this certainly is a story of hard work and perseverance. Now he is about to hit the road and it promises to be a stellar tour. If you want to see what makes him so special, then book your Cody Johnson tickets and see him live up close and personal.
Cody Johnson comes from Sebastopol, which is a small community in Texas on Trinity River’s eastern shore. Johnson grew up listening to music of legends like George Strait, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. His father used to play drums for a church’s congregation so it was no surprise to see Johnson picking up the drums before any other instrument.
He then picked up a guitar and then one day a teacher of his saw him play. That teacher asked him to start a band with other students and they eventually ended up winning a talent competition. Music still was not something he was thinking about taking up as a career.
A Band, A Rodeo and a Whole Lot More
Johnson became a professional rodeo and did fairly well in the sport. It did not come without a price though as he had to deal with plenty of broken bones along the way. This was the time when he first started recording his own music. He formed a band with his dad playing the drums. Together they came up with an album titled “Black and White Label” and Johnson began to sell the CD from his pickup.
To support himself financially, Johnson began to work at the prison. The band kept going and began to play over weekends. It wasn’t long before the band began to make some noise in the local Texas music scene. As a result of that, more and more people began to turn up at their performances. In 2007, his father left the band but that did not stop Johnson. More people were added to the line-up and things began to turn for the better.
The Star Begins to Shine
They came out with an album titled “Six Strings One Dream” in the year 2009 and it did quite well on the local charts. Three of its singles went to crack the Top 10 on the Texas music charts.
Cody Johnson decided it was time to take the next step and he then asked Trent Willmon to be his producer in the year 2011. His next album was named “A Different Day” and Willmon was responsible for its production. The album was released in 2011 and it went on to win the Texas Regional Music Award.
Johnson then quit his job in order to completely focus on his music career. He then came out with his next studio album titled “Cowboy Like Me” on January 14, 2014 and it went on to sell eight thousand copies in the first week alone. The record also went to the seventh spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart on its debut. On top of that, it also peaked at the thirty third position on the Billboard 200.
Johnson’s most recent album, “Gotta Be Me” hit the music stores on August 5, 2016 and it did even better than its predecessor. The record went straight to the eleventh position on the Billboard 200 upon its debut. It also went on to peak at the second spot on the Top Country Albums chart. The fact that the album did not have the backing of any major label or received a lot of airplay on the radio makes this even more impressive.
