Known to fans both as Chivas USA and The Goats, Chivas USA Club Deportivo was added to Major League Soccer in 2004 as the league’s eleventh team. Based in Los Angeles, Chivas USA is controlled by the Mexico-based parent club, CD Guadalajara, which is one of the most successful and popular teams in soccer-obsessed Mexico.
Owned by Mexican entrepreneur/film producer/philanthropist Jorge Vergara Madrigal, Chivas USA came into MLS with a bang, making the playoffs in four out of their first five seasons and then won the Western Conference Title in only their third year of play.
Back into Contention
After a couple of down years, the Goats look to usurp control of the Southern California soccer landscape with one of the most talented young rosters in MLS. Chivas USA plays its home games at the soccer-specific StubHub Center in Carson, California, which it shares with two-time defending MLS champs Los Angeles Galaxy . The fierce rivalry that exists between the teams is known as the Honda SuperClasico, and more familiarly, the LA Derby.
Selecting Carlos Alvarez in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft was a coup for Chivas USA. Not only is Alvarez a big talent, he’s also something of a club legacy as his father played for the parent club in Mexico. With fellow new additions Eric Avila, Steve Purdy and Carlos Borja joining uber-talented US International Juan Agudelo, Chivas USA is loaded in 2013.
