As the nephew of Ella Fitzgerald, a singer whose songs and sound remains universally appreciated years after her death, Christopher Williams entered this world with mystical musical expertise in his system. Entering any other profession just wouldn’t be right, and Williams wisely chose to follow in her footsteps.
In the late 1980s, Williams’ voice pierced through the world of Rhythm & Blues. As one of Geffen Records’ prime artists, he released a slew of hit singles, collaborated with several of the biggest names in music (including Mary J. Blige and Will Smith), and established himself as a star. He regularly appeared on successful compilation albums and frequently stood out as the high point.
A Singer with a Gift
His first three albums were successful both commercially and critically, starting with Adventures in Paradise in 1989, which reached #23 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. His next album, Changes, climbed to #12 on that same chart and was his first album to qualify for the Billboard 200 chart (it hit number 63). Williams’ third album, Not a Perfect Man, was released in 1995 and included the hit singles “Dance 4 Me” and “If You Say.”

Some of Williams’ biggest hits were “Promises, Promises,” “Every Little Thing U Do,” and “Talk to Myself,” and a high point of his career was his involvement with the hit movie New Jack City. In addition to appearing as an actor in the film, sharing the screen with Wesley Snipes, he recorded the song “I’m Dreamin” for the soundtrack. The song was arguably the biggest of Williams’ career and went to #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.
