Early Life & Influences
Chris Brown cites stars like Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Usher, James Brown and Marvin Gaye as his inspiration. Music had always been a big part of Chris Brown’s life. He grew up listening to his parents’ soul albums and with the passage of time he started to develop interest in hip-hop music. Brown learned to dance and sing too. He then auditioned for Tina Davis who was a senior level A&R executive working for Def Jam Recordings.
Impressed by his singing ability, Davis set up a meeting with “L.A.” Reid, Island Def Jam Music Group’s former president. He offered him a record deal right there and then. The contract however could never be signed for a variety of reasons. Brown later signed with Jive Records and said,
“I picked Jive because they had the best success with younger artists in the pop market. I knew I was going to capture my African American audience, but Jive had a lot of strength in the pop area as well as longevity in careers”
