Childish Gambino Tickets

Childish Gambino may be a famous rapper, but that is only one dimension of a much bigger identity. The name Childish Gambino is actually the name under which, Donald Glover, creates all his music. Glover is one of the most multi-faceted and talented young stars of this generation. He is not only a rapper but also a stand-up comedian, actor, producer, and writer. It seems as though there is nothing Donald Glover can’t do.

Early Life

Donald Glover was born in September of 1983 at Edwards Air Force Base in Kern County, California. Glover’s time in California was very short and at a young age his family moved to Stone Mountain, Georgia – a community about 20 miles outside of Atlanta. His mother was a daycare provider and his father was a post man. He had two siblings and two adopted siblings. His parents also took in a lot of foster children as Glover was growing up so his childhood was a bit hectic. His parents were also both Jehovah’s Witnesses. After high school, Glover attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and graduated in 2006 with a degree in dramatic writing. From then on, Glover’s career slowly started to take off.

Donald Glover’s musical stage name, Childish Gambino, was created at random by the Wu-Tang Clan’s name generator. All of Glover’s music is produced and performed under this stage name. Childish released his first album, Camp, in November of 2011. The album featured two debut singles, “Bonfire” and “Heartbeat”. “Heartbeat” hit number 18 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles and number 54 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Camp as a whole was successful as well, debuting at number 11 on the Billboard 200. His second studio album, Because The Internet dropped in December of 2013. This album featured singles like “3005”, “Crawl”, and “Sweatpants”. “3005” was a hit, peaking at number 8 on the UK R&B Chart and 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. Because The Internet is a certified gold record and also Childish’s first gold certification. The most recent album by Childish is “Awaken, My Love!” and was released in December of 2016. It is his most successful album to date, charting at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and became his second gold certified album. Childish Gambino at one point said he would never produce music again and would stick to being just Donald Glover. But in May of 2018 he dropped a single called “This Is America” and also announced a tour with Rae Sremmurd. It is expected he will drop a fourth album in the upcoming months.

Aside from Donald Glover’s music career, he is also extremely involved in writing, producing, and acting in TV and film. After graduating from NYU, Tina Fey handpicked Glover to be a writer on NBC’s 30 Rock. Glover was only 23 at the time and also made cameo appearances on the show. He wrote for 30 Rock for 3 years and in his final year of writing for the show in 2009, he was presented at the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy Series. After the 3 years of writing, Glover wanted to pursue acting more and was casted in the NBC sitcom Community. Glover played ex-highschool jock, Troy Barnes, but only stayed with the show for a little more than 4 seasons. He had written for television, then acted for television, but now Glover wanted to do both.

To do both writing and acting, Donald Glover began to develop and star in his own TV show, Atlanta. The show stars Glover as Earnest “Earn” Marks, a Princeton drop-out who manages his rapper cousin in the Atlanta rap scene. The series premiered in September 2016 and was an instant hit. The first season of the show was nominated for 6 Emmy Awards. Glover specifically was nominated for 4 out of the 6 and ended up winning 2 of them: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. This accolade made Glover the first African-American to ever win an Emmy for comedy directing. The show also won two Golden Globe awards and a Peabody award. Because of the success of the show, not only will there be a 2nd season of Atlanta, but Glover also signed an exclusive deal to create and develop more shows for the FX network.

Whether you want to call him Childish Gambino or Donald Glover, the bottom line is the same either way; this guy is talented. Whether it is rapping, acting, writing, or stand-up comedy, Glover seems to succeed at anything he puts his mind to.
