Here’s what’s going on at Wrigley Field this season.
Losing seasons lead to high draft picks and the Cubs are building up a full-on farm arsenal with can't-miss prospects already charging through the ranks of the minors. It's telling that Team President Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer are considered stars themselves within the executive ranks and their slow-and-steady approach to player development is starting to turn into results. The Cubs currently have five players that qualify as top-50 prospects, including quick-swinging shortstop Javier Baez and power hitter Kris Bryant, who mans third base. There's a good chance that both of these guys, along with Cuban defector Jorge Soler and Albert Almora, could find themselves playing at the corner of Clark and Addison by the end of this summer.
There's Still Time
Even though the Cubs are in last place, there's still plenty of time to turn things around. Starlin Castro hasn't lived up to his potential at the shortstop position, but he leads the team in hits and batting average while new starting pitcher Jason Hammel has been a great surprise with the lowest ERA he's posted in his entire career. With over 100 games left, anything can happen.
