Early Days

Charlie Wilson was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on January 29, 1953. He started taking singing lessons when he was only three years old. Wilson frequently accompanied his brothers to church choirs and developed an interest in singing which led him to perform as part of the choir team in high school.

Charlie and his siblings were not allowed to listen to secular music at home. However, they still managed to listen to James Brown and Stevie Wonder and were highly inspired by their music.

The Gap Band

Charlie Wilson formed The Gap Band with his brothers Robert and Ronnie in 1973. The group was a regular act at local clubs in Tulsa. At one of their gigs, they caught the attention of an acquaintance of the renowned country rock singer, Leon Russell. They were subsequently invited to audition at his studio and hired as Russell’s backup band.

Over the following years, the trio toured along Russell, gaining much exposure, confidence and grooming. They also had the opportunity to work with the iconic musician, actor and poet, Willie Nelson.

With their self-titled studio album, The Gap Band produced Top 10 R&B hits such as Shake and I’m in Love.

With Wilson as their lead vocalist, the band continued to treat the fans with mega hit songs such as You Dropped a Bomb on Me, Yearning for Your Love and Burn Rubber On Me.

Solo Career

Having carved a niche in the industry over decades of hit records, singles and shows, Wilson launched a solo music career with the album Bridging the Gap in 2000. It spawned his first top Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary single, Without You.

Uncle Charlie’s following album titled Charlie, Last Name Wilson hit the shelves in 2004. Its title song was a major hit and the record received Gold certification. Since then, Charlie has consistently ranked at the top of the Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary Singles chart. His fourth solo studio effort Uncle Charlie received two Grammy nominations; one for Best R&B Vocal Performance Male and the other for Best R&B Album.

The biggest hit single of Wilson’s illustrious career is You Are. Apart from topping the charts it earned the singer two nominations at the Grammys.
