At 24, Chance the Rapper has already become one of the most famous rap stars. Early Life & Influences
Chance the Rapper is one of the fastest rising stars around today. He came under the spotlight by impressing fans with his rapping and songwriting skills. He has been influenced by some of the best in the business including, Eminem, Kanye West, MC Hammer, Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco and James Brown.
He was born as Chancelor Johnathan Bennett in Chicago, Illinois. He fell in love with rap music when he heard, Through the Wire by Kanye West. Chance the Rapper liked the song so much that he purchased Kanye’s Grammy winning album, ‘The College Dropout.’ He soon decided to become a rapper and later participated in the YOUmedia Lyricist Loft at Harold Washington Public Library. He secured second position in that competition.
In 2011, while he was still enrolled in Jones College Prep High School, Chance the Rapper started to record his debut mixtape following a ten-day suspension from the campus. Titled, ’10 Day,’ he released the first song from his upcoming mixtape, Windows which featured Alex Wiley and Akenya Seymour. On April 3, 2012, Chance the Rapper finally released, ’10 Days.’ It took the world of rap music by storm and brought him great fame. So far, the mixtape has been downloaded in excess of four hundred thousand times on DatPiff. The mixtape enjoyed great commercial success. In the same year, the rapper made an appearance on Childish Gambino’s track, They Don’t Like Me and also joined him as an opening act on his first North American tour.
Chance the Rapper then began to work on his second mixtape. On April 30, 2013, ‘Acid Rap’ came out. It set the music industry abuzz and was downloaded more than one million times on DatPiff. Moreover, the mixtape also received four stars out of five from the Rolling Stone and was included in its list of the ’50 Best Albums of 2013.’ Not only that but it was also mentioned on Pitchfork’s list of the ‘Top 50 Albums of 2015.’ ‘Acid Rap’ was also nominated for a BET Hip Hop Award for ‘Best Mixtape.’ In an interview with MTV News, Chance the Rapper stated this regarding his second mixtape:
“Acid Rap is a little bit more free-form, just a collection of songs. But there's still one cohesive thing about it, something that perpetuates through the tracks ... and that's the questions. None of the songs are really declarative statements; a lot of them are just things that make you wonder.”
Chance the Rapper became extremely popular after the success enjoyed by Acid Rap. In 2014, he was included in XXL’s annual freshmen class and was also honored with Chicago’s ‘Outstanding Youth of the Year Award.’ In addition, he was ranked at the seventh spot on Forbes’ list of the ’30 Under 30.’ He also released a short film, ‘Mr. Happy’ in 2015 and appeared alongside Tinashe on the Snakehips’ song, All My Friends which was certified gold by the RIAA.
Chance the Rapper achieved another milestone when he became the first unsigned artist to be invited as a musical guest on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ His performance on the show was so entertaining that he received a nomination for an Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.’ He was also seen on major talk shows like ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,’ ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ and ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show.’
Notable Work and Album Releases
Since the beginning of his career in 2012, Chance the Rapper has dropped five mixtapes in total. Among them, ‘Free (Based Freestyle Mixtape)’ and ‘Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama’ are collaborative efforts with Lil B and Jeremih respectively. He released his highest charting mixtape, ‘Coloring Book’ on May 13, 2016. It landed at the eighth spot on the Billboard 200. Produced by Kanye West, Jordan Ware, Kaytranada and Garren Sean, it won a Grammy Award for the ‘Best Rap Album.’ ‘Coloring Book’ also offered two singles, Angles and No Problem out of which the latter peaked at the tenth spot on the Hot Rap Songs. Chance the Rapper has been pretty busy in 2017. He went on the ‘Be Encouraged Tour’ which started on April 24, 2017. During the trek, he performed shows in many cities throughout North America. Moreover, he also took his tour to Europe where he played a concert at the Finsbury Park in London, England on July 7th. He ended his road trip by playing the final two shows of the ‘Be Encouraged Tour’ at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on October 3rd and 4th.
Apart from touring, he was also seeing rapping on DJ Khaled’s hit song, I’m the One which also featured, Lil Wayne, Justin Bieber and Quavo. The track was released on April 28, 2017 and it smashed the charts in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. It was also awarded multi-platinum certification by the RIAA and ARIA.
Chance the Rapper has no plans of slowing down. In fact, he is scheduled to perform at the Austin City Limits Festival with stars like, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jay-Z on October 13th and 14th. He will also be taking the stage at the Lost Lake Festival on October 20th with The Killers and Major Lazer.
