Catch Me if You Can is a musical production with a libretto by Terrance McNally. The musical tells the story of Frank Abagnale Jr.’s life as a con artist as though it were a 1960s TV special. It begins with Abagnale Jr.’s arrest, after which he demands to make a statement, and proceeds to recount all of the lies and adventures (including impersonating a Pan American World Airways pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer all before the age of 21) that got him to where he is today. The story is based on Steven Spielberg’s movie of the same name as well as the autobiography of Frank Abagnale Jr. himself.
While Leonardo DiCaprio certainly shined in his role as Abagnale Jr. on the big screen, Aaron Tveit stole the show in his portrayal of the same character during the musical’s run on Broadway. His performance stole the show (much like his character stole millions of dollars), and the musical was nominated for four Tony Awards. A reviewer for The Huffington Post describes the show as “this generation's answer to How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying,” and goes on to explain that “that show may have the better songs but this one has heart.”
