Early Life and Involvement in Music

Born Adam Richard Wiles in January 1984 in Dumfries, Scotland, Calvin Harris was first attracted to electronic music in his teenage years. He began recording bedroom demos around 1999 and released two songs at 18 years of age – “Da Bongos” and “Brighter Days”. With two singles to his name, Harris moved to London in hopes of learning from the local music scene there. However, things did not work out as planned and Harris moved back to his hometown. Here he started uploading material on his MySpace page and began attracting attention. Soon he caught the eye of Mark Gillespie, a talent booker for the firm Global Gathering. He had recently created his own management firm and Harris became his first signing.

Career Beginnings

Harris managed to get contracts with Three Six Zero Group for management, EMI for publishing and Sony BMG for recording in 2006, after being discovered through his MySpace account. Soon, he started working on his debut album, I Created Disco, which was released in June 2007. All the tracks on this album were written, produced and performed entirely by Harris himself on an Amiga computer. For the promotion of this album, Harris embarked on a UK tour as a supporting act for Faithless and Groove Armada.

Harris’s debut album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and managed to reach the 8th spot on the UK Albums Chart and number 19 on the US Top Electronic Albums chart. Singles “Acceptable in the 80s”, “The Girls” and “Merrymaking at My Place” all performed well on the charts.

Things really started to look up for the DJ when the Australian pop icon, Kylie Minogue took note of his work. He produced two songs for her 2007 album, X, and both were very well received by audiences. He continued to collaborate with other artists as well, including the rapper Dizzee Rascal, for which he also received an Ivor Novello Award nomination for the Best Contemporary Song.

More Music and Greater Success

Calvin Harris released his second album, Ready for the Weekend in August 2009 and it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, eventually getting a gold certification from the BPI. Singles “I’m Not Alone” and “Ready for the Weekend” performed well and charted on the UK Singles Chart.

International Fame

After realizing his talents were more towards music production and less towards singing, Harris decided to change the direction of his career. In an interview with Billboard, he said, “I thought I'd exhausted every avenue [on the two albums] and it takes a long time to make me sound good, which is why I stopped singing live as well. I'd like to think of someone who's better-looking, a better singer, better dancer to be the frontperson for the song."

In 2011, Harris got the chance to tour alongside Rihanna as a support act on the European leg of her Loud Tour. He also played at the 2011 Mardi Gras Party in Sydney and was featured on LMFAO’s hit album, Sorry for Party Rocking.

In 2011, Harris released “Feel So Close”, which peaked at number two in the UK and became the Scottish artist’s first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US, reaching number 12. Calvin Harris then produced Rihanna’s super hit single “We Found Love”. The song topped charts in 27 countries including the UK, where it became the Scottish singer’s third number one single. “We Found Love” broke many records all over the world and remained on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 non-consecutive weeks. The song ended up being Rihanna’s longest running number one single in the US and the longest running number one single of the year 2011 overall. The song also got placed at number three on Billboard’s top 10 dance-pop collaborations of all time.

Record-Breaking Success

In April 2012, Harris released “Let’s Go”, featuring Ne-Yo. The song peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also received a nomination for the Best Dance Recording at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. Harris’s third studio album, 18 Months, was released in October 2012 and he made the UK chart history by becoming the first artist to have eight top-10 singles from one studio album alone, a record previously held by Michael Jackson and now (March 2017) broken by Ed Sheeran. The album also received a Grammy nomination for the Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards.

Harris continued on his successful streak with performances at multiple festivals in 2014 – Coachella, Lollapalooza, iTunes Festival, iHeartRadio Music Festival and Austin City Limits Music Festival.

Musical Style of Calvin Harris

The first two albums by Harris were mostly electroclash and nu-disco music, influenced by music from the 1980s. In his third album and subsequent work, his musical style moved more towards EDM and electro house, with his latest album, the 2017 Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, adopting a more funk sound.
