Bruce Springsteen has been a cultural phenomenon, a folk revivalist and a genuine storyteller for nearly four decades now. The rock star is a well-respected singer-songwriter, whose best known songs talk about his working class roots in New Jersey. Born in 1949, Springsteen started out by playing the bar circuit as he pieced together his popular E Street Band. Known as “The Boss” back then, the rock musician has managed to establish himself as a poetic lyricist. Early Life and Musical Struggles

Springsteen got interested in music as he grew up hearing some of the greats of music – Frank Sinatra, The Beatles and Elvis Presley. He bought his first guitar in 1964 and started playing for audiences at local venues, with a band called Rogues. When he was 16 years old, his mother bought him a $60 guitar and he started pursuing music more seriously. Soon he became the lead guitarist of a local band called the Castiles. In the late 1960s, he briefly performed in the trio, Earth, followed by a brief stint with Steel Mill, another local group.

Springsteen was signed on to Columbia Records in 1972 and began recording for his first album with what would later become the E Street Band. His first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. was released in 1973 and received a great response from music critics, but was not much of a commercial success.

His second album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle met a similar fate – being appreciated by critics for its authenticity, but not getting much commercial success.  

Breakthrough

In August of 1975, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band started a five-night long, 10-show stand at The Bottom Line club in New York. This show is what Rolling Stone magazine would later call one of the 50 Moments That Changed Rock and Roll. With the release of his third album, Born to Run in the same month, Springsteen finally got his big breakthrough. The album peaked at third place on the Billboard 200 and many tracks from it received heavy airplay.

In October of the same year, Springsteen appeared on the covers of Time and Newsweek.

Springsteen began work on his next album, Darkness on the Edge of Town in 1977. The album was released in the next year and saw a shift in his style of music, to a more politically and intellectually aware style. The tour that followed this album is still remembered as one of the most legendary and intense tours of all time.

The Height of Commercial Success

In 1984, Springsteen released his album, Born in the U.S.A. which sold more than 30 million copies across the world and had seven singles in the Top 10. The time following the release of this album truly represented the height of Springsteen’s fame in the contemporary popular culture.

Influences and Themes in Bruce Springsteen’s Music

Springsteen’s music has drawn on from many influences. From the beginning, rock and roll has been a major influence, as well as folk, country and blues. The singer was inspired by many big names of his time, including Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison. In his recent works, Springsteen has incorporated a series of new stylistic elements into his work, with the addition of rap, hip-hop and gospel.

As far as the themes and lyrical content of Springsteen’s music goes, he has mostly explored personal experiences such as dissatisfaction with life in everyday situations or individual commitment. Another theme he has frequently revisited is the emotional struggles of the working class.

Awards and Achievements

In the forty years of his career, Springsteen has released 18 studio albums and had headlined seventeen tours. With such a long-standing association with music, it comes as no surprise that the artist has achieved a lot and has won many awards, including 20 Grammy Awards out of 49 nominations. He has also won an Academy Award for the Best Original Song for Streets of Philadelphia. Other awards include two Golden Globes – one for Streets of Philadelphia in 1994 and the other for The Wrestler in 2009. Springsteen has also won several MTV Video Music Awards, BRIT Awards and American Music Awards.

Other achievements by the artist include his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1999 and the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2007. He has even had a planet, 23990 named after him. Springsteen was ranked at No. 23 on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list in 2004 and appeared on Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the Year in 2008. Forbes magazine has ranked him 6^th in their list of The Celebrity 100 in 2009. Springsteen also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

Springsteen on Broadway is the latest series of performances being held by the Jersey-based artist, at the Walter Kerr Theater.
