Early Years

Bret Michael Sychak was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 15, 1963. He graduated from the Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School. During his teens, Michaels began to play the guitar and soon formed a band with bassist Bobby Dall, drummer Rikki Rockett and guitarist David Besselman. The lead guitarist who had introduced Michaels to Bobby and Rikki left the band owing to creative differences. Matt Smith was hence hired and eventually the band Paris came into existence in 1983. After earning popularity in Pennsylvania, the musicians relocated to Los Angeles in 1984 to seek recognition on the Sunset Boulevard scene. It was at this point in time that they changed the band’s name to Poison.  The musicians faced a period of struggle during which Matt Smith left the band and C.C. DeVille stepped into his shoes.

Poison

Poison eventually cracked a deal with Enigma Records and released their debut album Look What the Cat Dragged In in 1986. The initial response to the record was not too great. Michaels convinced his fellow members to shoot a video for the song Talk Dirty To Me. The song was a hit and the album steadily gained momentum, reaching the third spot on the Billboard 200 in May, 1987. Michaels served not only as the ensemble’s lead vocalist but also worked with other members to write the songs for the collection.

Look What the Cat Dragged In went on to become one of bestselling albums of the band. It ranked second on the Greatest Hair Metal Albums of All-Time list by the renowned Rolling Stone magazine. With their very first album, Poison had managed to garner a devoted fan base who loved their glam rock look and pop-infused metal sound.

Their second music album titled Open Up and say… Ah! hit the music stores in 1988 and turned out to be an even bigger success. Comprising popular singles such as Fallen Angel, Your Mama Don’t Dance, Every Rose Has Its Thorns and Nothin’ But a Good Time, the album reached the second spot on the Billboard 200. The ballad Every Rose Has Its Thorns reached the number one spot on the pop charts, while the infectious party song Nothin’ But a Good Time reached the Top 10.

Soon Poison progressed from playing live supporting acts to being the headliners. During the 1980 and 1990s, Poison was recognized as one of the most successful glam metal bands in the world. It had its share of tensions and went through a number of line-up changes and hiatuses. In 1998 Bret Michaels decided to pursue his career as a solo music artist as well. From then onwards, he divided his time between his solo recordings and projects with Poison.

Solo Contributions

Bret Michaels’ debut album as a solo musician was titled A Letter From Death Row. Its title song also served as the soundtrack to a movie of the same name, which the singer wrote, directed and also acted in. Besides, the record includes the single Party Rock Band featuring C.C. Deville on lead guitar. This was the first time Michaels and Deville had recorded together since C.C. Deville’s departure from the band in 1991. In fact it was this recording that led to the highly successful Poison reunion tour (with original guitarist C.C. Deville) in 1999.

The following year Michaels treated the fans with the album Show Me Your Hits. It consists of re-recorded versions of famous Poison songs, sang by Michaels in an entirely different way. The collection also features appearances by guest artists on selected songs.

The lead vocalist of Poison released his second solo studio record Songs of Life on April 22, 2003. Written by Michaels himself, the music on this album is inspired by the events in the singer’s life and hence is very special to him. Its first single Raine is dedicated to Michaels’ then two-year-old daughter, Raine Elizabeth Sychak. The music video for the song was made by the award winning director, Shane Stanley. He shot it at ten different locations over a span of six months. It includes some of the singer’s actual family footage as well.

Two years later, the musician was seen as a judge on the reality TV singing competition show, Nashville Star. The same year, he released a country rock album titled Freedom of Sound. The lead single All I Ever Needed featuring Jessica Andrews reached the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at number 45. The singles Open Road and Right Now, Right Here were released prior to the album and performed live by the singer on Nashville Star. Besides, Freedom of Sound comprised a new country version of the number one Poison hit Every Rose Has Its Thorns.

In the year 2010, Michaels released the single Nothing to Lose from his upcoming studio record, Custom built. Featuring guest vocals by popular singer Miley Cyrus, it was the most added song on radio in the week it came out. It was followed by the second single Lie to Me in April and Wasted Time in May, 2010. In July, Michaels finally released his much anticipated fourth studio album, Custom Built. It turned out to be his highest charting solo album, reaching the top spot on the Top Independent Albums chart as well as the Top Hard Rock Albums chart.
